Instead, passengers and freight must be transferred between different trains at the points where the tracks change. This process can be very time-consuming and inefficient. Engineers often work to implement a standard gauge, which is a uniform width, to allow seamless travel.

In Australia, the history of gauge standardization is a clear example of this struggle. The east-west transcontinental rail corridor was completed in 1917 with the opening of the Trans-Australian Railway. This line connected Port Augusta in South Australia to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. At that time, travelers faced many breaks of gauge. A journey from Perth to Brisbane involved standard gauge 1435 mm lines, a broad gauge 1600 mm line, and three different 1067 mm gauge lines. It was not until 1970 that the route across the continent was completed to a single standard gauge. This allowed the inauguration of the Indian Pacific, an all-through passenger train.

Australia also features a significant north-south transcontinental corridor. This route runs from Adelaide to Darwin and was built in various stages during the 20th century. A major gap was finally closed in 1980 when the Tarcoola to Alice Springs section was finished. The final section from Alice Springs to Darwin opened in 2004. This completion ended 126 years of having to transfer freight and passengers between different gauges. Today, the corridor uses the 1435 mm standard gauge. It supports important freight and the upmarket tourism train known as The Ghan.
