Many volcanoes in this belt are very tall. Some are stratovolcanoes, which are large, cone-shaped mountains. The highest peak is Pico de Orizaba. It is the highest point in all of Mexico. Some peaks even have snow all year long.

It covers a large part of central and southern Mexico. This belt is about 1,000 kilometers long. It is also quite wide, stretching between 90 and 230 kilometers. Some of its highest peaks have snow on them all year. Many people living on the high plateaus can see these mountains clearly. This belt is very important to the land and its people.

This belt forms through a process called subduction. This happens when the Rivera and Cocos plates slide under the North American plate. They move along a place called the Middle America Trench. As these plates move, they create many different volcanic shapes. You can find large stratovolcanoes, which are tall, cone-shaped mountains. There are also shield volcanoes and lava dome complexes. Some areas even have large calderas, which are big holes left by eruptions.

Scientists have studied how this belt changed over millions of years. Long ago, an older volcanic belt called the Sierra Madre Occidental was in this area. Between the Late Eocene and Middle Miocene, the area changed. The old belt moved in a counterclockwise direction. This rotation helped turn the old system into the new Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. By the Middle Miocene, the change in the rocks was complete. This marked the true beginning of the belt we see today.

There are many famous volcanoes located within this long chain. From west to east, they include Nevado de Colima and Parícutin. Other important ones are Popocatépetl and Pico de Orizaba.

Pico de Orizaba is actually the highest point in all of Mexico. The belt sits between 18°30'N and 21°30'N latitude. It covers a total area of about 160,000 square kilometers. These numbers show just how massive this volcanic structure really is.

Even though volcanoes can be intense, they help life thrive. Volcanic ash makes the soil in this region very fertile. This rich dirt is great for growing plants and food. The Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt is a massive, active volcanic arc in central-southern Mexico. It stretches roughly 1,000 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. This belt covers an area of approximately 160,000 square kilometers. It is a unique geological structure because it does not run parallel to the Middle America Trench. Instead, many of its main stratovolcanoes sit at an angle to the arc. This belt is vital to the geography and ecology of the region.

The belt forms through a process called subduction. This occurs as the Rivera and Cocos plates slide beneath the North American plate. This movement happens along the Middle America Trench. The Cocos plate moves at a rate of 50 to 90 millimeters per year. The smaller Rivera plate moves at about 30 millimeters per year. As these plates sink, they create heat and pressure in the Earth. This process generates various volcanic features like large stratovolcanoes and shield volcanoes. It also creates lava dome complexes and large calderas.

Scientists believe the belt evolved through several distinct stages. During the early to mid-Miocene, between 20 and 8 million years ago, the arc produced intermediate volcanoes. These were mainly andesitic and dacitic polygenetic volcanoes. Around 11 million years ago, a pulse of mafic volcanism swept across central Mexico. This was caused by a slab tear, which allowed heat from the asthenosphere to enter the mantle wedge. Later, in the Pliocene, the belt experienced flat slab subduction. This process pushed the volcanic belt further inland toward the north.

The history of this region involves a major transition from an older system. Before this belt formed, the Sierra Madre Occidental occupied the area. This older volcanic arc was made of silicic rocks. Between the Late Eocene and the Middle Miocene, the volcanic arc rotated counterclockwise. This rotation changed the active area into the modern Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. By the Middle Miocene, the chemical composition of the rocks had completely changed. This transition marked the official beginning of the current volcanic belt.

The geological foundation of the belt is very complex and varies by location. East of 101°W, the belt rests on ancient Precambrian terranes. These include the Oaxaquia microcontinent and the Paleozoic Mixteco terrane. The basement rocks here are 50 to 55 kilometers thick. West of 101°W, the belt sits on the Guerro composite terrane. This area is made of Jurassic to Cretaceous marine marginal arcs. The basement rocks in the west are slightly thinner, measuring 35 to 40 kilometers.

Many famous and massive volcanoes define the landscape of the belt. Pico de Orizaba, also known as Citlaltépetl, is the highest point in Mexico. Other notable volcanoes include Nevado de Colima, Parícutin, and Popocatépetl. Moving east, you will also find Nevado de Toluca, Iztaccíhuatl, and Matlalcueitl. The Colima volcanic complex is the largest volcanic edifice in the entire belt. These peaks are often so high that they have snow on them all year.

Despite the volcanic activity, the belt supports a rich and diverse environment. The mountains host the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt pine-oak forests. These forests are part of the Mesoamerican pine-oak ecoregions. Many species found here are endemic, meaning they live nowhere else. An example is the Transvolcanic jay. Additionally, volcanic ash creates very fertile soil in the region. This nutrient-rich soil supports high human population densities. However, these large populations can sometimes put a strain on the local environment.
