The European Union has a big plan for travel. It is called the TEN-T. This stands for the Trans-European Transport Network. 

The network includes many different parts. It uses roads and railways for land travel. It also uses airports for planes. Ships use seaports and rivers to move things. These parts work together to make long trips easy.
There are nine main paths called Core network corridors. These paths link many different lands. For example, the Atlantic Corridor goes from Portugal to France. The Rhine-Alpine Corridor connects countries like Belgium and Italy. 
Most of the money for these paths comes from governments. Some money also comes from private groups and banks. The plan is always changing to help new places. In 2022, leaders decided to link paths to Moldova and Ukraine. This helps more people join the network.

This network works by linking different ways of moving things. This is called intermodal transport. This means a trip might start on a ship, move to a train, and end on a truck. The plan focuses on high-speed routes and smart traffic management. It also uses water infrastructure like inland ports and waterways. By coordinating these parts, the network creates smooth paths for travel. Everything is designed to work as one big, connected system. 
Leaders have been working on this plan for a long time. The European Commission first made action plans in 1990. In July 1996, the European Parliament and Council officially decided to adopt TEN-T. Since then, the rules have changed many times to help more people. In 2001, they added new rules for seaports and terminals. In 2004, they changed policies to help the network grow with new countries. A group called INEA has helped manage these big projects since 2013.

You can think of TEN-T like the veins in a body. Just as veins carry blood to every part, these paths carry people everywhere. It is similar to how the internet connects computers across the world. The network even connects to neighbors outside the main group. In 2019, the network reached as far as Armenia. In 2022, leaders agreed to link the network to Moldova and Ukraine. This helps these countries join the larger European rail and road systems.

To make this work, the network relies on a process called intermodal transport. This means different types of transport work together in a single journey. A shipment might travel by sea to an inland port, then move to a train, and finally reach its destination by truck. 
The network is organized into specific levels to manage its massive scale. In December 2013, the guidelines defined the system using two main levels. These are the Comprehensive network and the Core network. The Core network is further divided into nine specific Core network corridors. 
History shows that building such a system takes decades of planning. The European Commission began adopting the first action plans in 1990. In July 1996, the European Parliament and Council officially decided to adopt TEN-T. The guidelines have changed many times to keep up with a changing Europe. For example, a 2004 revision helped the network grow as more countries joined the EU. In 2001, new rules were added to include seaports and inland terminals. Since 2013, the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency, or INEA, has managed these projects. 
The nine Core network corridors vary greatly in size and location. The Atlantic Corridor is the longest, stretching 8,200 km from Lisbon to Strasbourg. The Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor is also very large, covering 4,858 km from Helsinki to Valletta. In contrast, the Rhine–Alpine Corridor is much shorter at 1,300 km, connecting Genoa to Rotterdam. Other corridors include the Baltic–Adriatic Corridor, which is 2,400 km long. The Orient/East–Med Corridor reaches 3,700 km, while the Mediterranean Corridor spans 3,000 km. These specific measurements show the incredible scale of the project.
Building these corridors involves many different types of transport networks. There is a dedicated road network and a rail network. The rail network includes both conventional lines and high-speed lines. Water transport is split into inland waterways and seaports, which includes "Motorways of the Sea." 
Finally, TEN-T is constantly expanding to connect with neighboring regions. In 2017, the network began extending further into Eastern Europe and the Balkans. By February 2019, the furthest eastern expansion reached as far as Armenia. In July 2022, new agreements were made to link four corridors with Moldova and Ukraine. To help these countries join the EU rail system, experts recommended using a standard gauge of 1435mm. This specific rail width helps avoid the disruptions caused by the 1520mm lines used in those regions. The network continues to evolve to bridge different parts of the world.
