Hideyoshi joined the Oda clan in 1558 as an ashigaru. He quickly distinguished himself by becoming Nobunaga's sandal-bearer, a position of high status. He proved himself to be a capable administrator and a clever negotiator. In 1564, he used bribes to convince several warlords to switch sides. By 1568, he was one of Nobunaga's most distinguished generals. He eventually took the name Hashiba Hideyoshi to reflect his growing importance within the clan.

While they did not fight in person, the tension between them was high. Eventually, Hideyoshi and Ieyasu reached a peace agreement. However, Ieyasu refused to become Hideyoshi's vassal. After Hideyoshi died in 1598, his son Hideyori was eventually displaced by Ieyasu. This led to the start of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Hideyoshi left a lasting legacy through many social and physical changes.

He implemented the "sword hunt," which restricted the possession of weapons to the samurai class. He also helped build and restore many temples in Kyoto.
