This prevents the user from overtightening the fastener. Another method uses a calibrated clutch mechanism, often called a click torque wrench. This design uses a ball detent and a spring. When the preset torque is reached, the spring's force is overcome, and the ball clicks out of its socket.

The history of these tools involves several important inventors. John H. Sharp of Chicago filed the first patent for a torque measuring wrench in 1931. In 1935, Conrad Bahr and George Pfefferle patented an adjustable ratcheting torque wrench. Bahr worked for the New York City Water Department. In the United States, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers maintains the ASME B107.300 standard. This standard includes a third type called the limiting torque tool. These tools are designed to release the drive once the target torque is met. While the ISO and ASME standards both categorize tools, they are not compatible with each other.
