These storms are often seen as a funnel shape. This shape is called a condensation funnel. It happens because the spinning air has very low pressure. This low pressure causes water vapor to turn into tiny droplets.

Some tornadoes are very small and narrow. One tornado had a path only 100 feet long. Other tornadoes are much larger. The widest tornado on record was in El Reno, Oklahoma. It was about 2.6 miles wide.

We can measure how strong a tornado is. Scientists use the Enhanced Fujita Scale, or EF scale.

An EF0 tornado is the weakest kind. It might only damage some trees. An EF5 tornado is the most powerful. It can rip buildings off their foundations. There is also a scale called the TORRO scale. It goes from T0 to T11. This helps us understand the damage they leave behind.

If the circulation reaches the ground with winds exceeding 39 miles per hour, it is classified as a tornado. Some tornadoes may begin as funnel clouds that never reach the surface. Others may appear as a small swirl of dust if they are weak landspouts.

Tornadoes come in several distinct types and shapes. A multiple-vortex tornado features several swirls circling a common center. Some tornadoes look like narrow tubes or ropes as they dissipate. This stage is called "roping out," where the funnel lengthens and winds weaken.

Other large tornadoes appear as wide "wedges" that are wider than their height. Some tornadoes may even have a cylindrical "stovepipe" profile. Waterspouts are another type, occurring over bodies of water. They are often non-supercellular and develop in tropical areas near the equator.

History and the study of these storms have evolved through technology. The word tornado comes from the Spanish word for thunderstorm, which stems from the Latin "tonare," meaning to thunder. Scientists now use pulse-Doppler radar to detect these events. They look for specific patterns like hook echoes or debris balls in the data.

In terms of duration, the Tri-State Tornado of 1925 traveled for 3.5 hours. More recently, a 2021 Kentucky tornado stayed on the ground for 165.6 miles.

These phenomena are part of a broader global weather system. Tornadoes are most common in North America, specifically in "Tornado Alley."
