His comedy was very special because his magic tricks always seemed to fail. Instead of doing perfect magic, he made funny mistakes that made the audience cheer. This style made him one of the most recognizable funny men of the 20th century. He stayed popular with audiences for nearly 40 years.

His unique way of performing started with a funny accident in Egypt. While serving in the British Army, Cooper forgot a piece of his costume for a sketch. He borrowed a red fez from a passing waiter to finish his act. The audience loved it so much that he wore the hat for the rest of his career. He later became a member of The Magic Circle, a famous group for magicians. He even worked as a shipwright in Southampton before his stage career took off.

Cooper was born on March 19, 1921, in Caerphilly, Wales. His father, Thomas H. Cooper, was a recruiting sergeant in the British Army. His mother, Catherine Gertrude, was from Devon, England. When he was only three years old, his family moved to Exeter, Devon. As a young boy, he received a magic set from his aunt. He spent many hours practicing his tricks to make them perfect. He eventually moved into show business on Christmas Eve in 1947.

He became a massive star through his work on television programs. He worked with London Weekend Television from 1968 to 1972. Later, he worked with Thames Television from 1973 to 1980. During the mid-1970s, he was at the very top of his career. However, his health began to struggle due to heavy smoking and drinking. He suffered from many pains, including bad back pain and breathing problems. These health issues eventually changed how much television work he could do.

Today, many people still remember his talent and his jokes. In 2005, other comedians voted him the sixth greatest comedy act ever. A bronze statue of him was unveiled in Caerphilly in 2008. The famous actor Sir Anthony Hopkins helped reveal the statue.

His comedy style was unique because it centered on magic tricks that appeared to fail. This specialized act of "failed" conjuring made him one of the most recognizable entertainers of the 20th century. He remained a popular figure for nearly 40 years.

Cooper's performance style relied on a specific comedic mechanism. He used his skills as a conjurer to set up an illusion. Then, he would make a mistake or a "failure" that triggered laughter from the crowd. He sometimes did this on purpose to keep audiences surprised. Occasionally, he would perform a trick that actually worked when it was least expected. This helped maintain the tension and excitement of his shows. He was a member of The Magic Circle, a prestigious organization for magicians.

His career can be divided into several distinct stages. He began by working as a shipwright in Southampton, Hampshire. He then served seven years as a trooper in the Royal Horse Guards. During his military service, he joined the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI) entertainment party. This is where he began mixing magic with comedy. Later, he moved into variety theater and night spots. Finally, he reached international prominence through television work with London Weekend Television and Thames Television.

The red fez became an icon of his career due to a specific event in Cairo. While serving in the military, Cooper forgot a piece of his costume for a sketch. He borrowed a fez from a passing waiter to complete his outfit. The audience responded with huge laughs. From that moment on, the fez became a permanent part of his stage persona. He officially entered the world of show business on Christmas Eve, 1947.

Cooper's life was marked by significant professional success and personal challenges. He was a top-liner in variety shows, sometimes performing as many as 52 shows in a single week. In the mid-1970s, he was at the peak of his fame. However, heavy smoking and drinking eventually affected his health and professionalism. He suffered from chronic indigestion, bronchitis, and severe circulation problems in his legs. By 1980, these issues meant he could no longer lead his own starring series on Thames Television.

On 15 April 1984, a serious event occurred during a live broadcast. While performing on the London Weekend Television show *Live from Her Majesty's*, Cooper suffered a heart attack. The incident happened midway through his act at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. Because he was a comedian, the audience initially believed his collapse was part of the comedy. They continued to laugh, thinking he was making a joke about his costume. The crew and host, Jimmy Tarbuck, soon realized the situation was a medical emergency. Cooper was taken to Westminster Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at age 63.

Cooper's legacy continues through various honors and cultural connections. In 2005, a poll of comedy insiders voted him the sixth greatest comedy act ever. A bronze statue of him was unveiled in his birthplace of Caerphilly in 2008. This statue was sculpted by James Done and unveiled by Sir Anthony Hopkins.
