The Flavian family rose from relative obscurity to high status over four generations. Titus's great-grandfather, Titus Flavius Petro, was a centurion. A centurion is a professional officer in the Roman army. Petro's career ended poorly after the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC. However, he married a very wealthy woman named Tertulla. This marriage helped the family's social mobility. His son, Titus Flavius Sabinus I, worked as a tax collector and a banker. This wealth allowed the family to enter the senatorial rank. By the time Titus was born, the family was firmly part of the new Italian nobility.
