Human history in this area stretches back to prehistoric times. The earliest recognized reference is found at the Cave of Pëllumbas from the Palaeolithic period. The Illyrians were the first major population to inhabit the region. They likely formed the core of the Illyrian kingdom of the Taulantii. This kingdom was centered in the hinterland of Epidamnus during classical antiquity. Following the Illyrian Wars, the Roman Empire annexed the territory.

One of the oldest surviving Roman discoveries is a house from the 3rd century AD. This house featured a mosaic floor and was later used as an aisleless church.

Various empires and leaders shaped the settlement over many centuries. The Byzantine Emperor Justinian I built a castle between the 4th and 6th centuries.

Before this, the area was described as a small village. In 1510, the scholar Marin Barleti distinguished between "Little Tirana" and "Great Tirana." By 1431, records showed the settlement had 60 inhabited areas and 7,300 inhabitants.

The 20th century brought rapid political shifts and urban growth. After Albania declared independence in 1912, the country faced years of turmoil. The Serbian army occupied Tirana in 1912 during the Balkan Wars. However, the Congress of Lushnjë proclaimed Tirana as the temporary capital in 1920.

It officially became the permanent capital on December 31, 1925. During the rule of King Zog I, the city saw more migration. Italian architects like Florestano Di Fausto also influenced the modern city center. They helped design the arrangement of ministerial buildings.

Political changes in the mid-20th century transformed the city's appearance. Following World War II, the city became the center for Albanian communists. From 1944 to 1991, the government built massive socialist-style apartment complexes and factories.

Skanderbeg Square was redesigned, and many older structures were demolished. For example, the Old Bazaar and the Orthodox Cathedral were razed to build the Palace of Culture. During this period, private car ownership was banned. Most people used bicycles, trucks, or buses for transportation.

Since the fall of communism in the early 1990s, Tirana has seen intense development. University students led demonstrations in the early 1990s to demand political freedoms.

In the 2000s, Mayor Edi Rama began several urban renewal projects. He worked to demolish illegal buildings along the Lana River banks. He also led an initiative to paint building façades in bright colors.
