His writing has reached a global audience. Snyder has written fifteen books and co-edited two others. One of his most significant works is titled Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin. Published in 2010, this book became a best-seller. It was translated into thirty different languages. The book examines how 13 million civilians were murdered for political reasons. It looks at the overlapping crimes of the Nazi and Soviet regimes. This work changed how many people view European history. 
Other books address modern political challenges. In 2017, he published On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century. This book offers advice on preventing democracy from becoming a tyranny. It stayed on the New York Times best-seller list for many years. In 2018, he released The Road to Unfreedom. This work explores Russian influence on Western democracies. He also wrote Black Earth in 2015 about the Holocaust. His recent work includes On Freedom, published in 2024. 
Snyder is also involved in modern civic and digital issues. He serves on the Committee on Conscience of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. In 2020, he joined the Real Facebook Oversight Board. This is an independent group that monitors the social media platform Facebook.
