The city is a provider of medical tourism, specifically for cosmetic surgery and dental care. It has seen medical breakthroughs like the first stem cell transplant and the first in vitro fertilization (IVF). In the technology sector, it is one of Romania's most powerful IT hubs. In 2013, Timișoara recorded the fastest internet download speed in the world. It also held the title of European Capital of Culture in 2023.
