Life was very difficult for many people. A great famine happened between 1601 and 1603. The crops did not grow well. This led to hunger and disease. Many people died during these years.

Trouble grew as people fought for power. Some men claimed to be the lost prince, Dmitry. They were called "false Dmitrys." One man, False Dmitry I, even became tsar for a short time. But many Russians did not trust him. They thought he was a tool for Poland.

The Time of Troubles was a period of great crisis in Russia. It lasted from 1598 to 1613. This era began when Tsar Feodor I died without any children to follow him. His death ended the Rurik dynasty, which had ruled for a long time. Because there was no clear heir, a violent fight for power began. Many people struggled to find a new leader to guide the land.

Life became very hard for the people living in Russia. A terrible famine occurred between 1601 and 1603 due to poor harvests. During these years, summer temperatures even dropped below freezing at night. This famine and the sickness that followed killed a huge part of the population. Hunger led to riots and social unrest across the country. These hard times made it even more difficult to keep peace.

Confusion grew as people claimed to be the lost prince, Dmitry. This prince was said to have died young in Uglich. These men were known as "false Dmitrys" because they were impostors. False Dmitry I appeared in 1603 and claimed to be the true heir. He gained support from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and several cossack groups. He eventually entered Moscow and was crowned tsar in 1605.

Not everyone accepted these new leaders, which led to more fighting. Prince Vasilii Shuiskii was a powerful man who worked against False Dmitry I. In May 1606, a large uprising broke out in Moscow. An armed mob killed the tsar during this violent event. This caused even more instability and led to further civil wars. The country faced many different leaders during these chaotic years.

Finally, the period of trouble came to an end in 1613. A group called the Zemsky Sobor met to choose a new ruler. They elected Michael Romanov to be the next tsar. This event started the Romanov dynasty in Russia. This new family would rule the land until the year 1917. The election helped bring a new sense of order to the nation.

The Time of Troubles, known in Russian as Smuta, was a period of extreme political and social crisis. It occurred in Russia from 1598 to 1613. This era was defined by a lack of stable leadership and widespread lawlessness. The crisis began when Tsar Feodor I died without a direct heir. His death ended the Rurik dynasty, which had ruled Russia for centuries.

Before the crisis, the Russian throne was managed by a council of regents. When Feodor I ruled, he was a pious man who lacked interest in politics. He relied heavily on Boris Godunov, a powerful boyar and his closest advisor. Godunov became the sole regent and the most influential man in the country. However, the political foundation was fragile. In 1591, the young Tsarevich Dmitrii reportedly died in Uglich during an epileptic seizure. This death left the Rurik line without a clear successor, creating a vacuum of power.

Following Feodor's death in 1598, the succession crisis triggered deep instability. Boris Godunov was crowned tsar, but his claim was seen by some as illegitimate. He even held a sham Zemsky Sobor, a national assembly, to confirm his election. During his rule, Godunov expanded Russian territory. However, he also implemented harsh laws. In 1597, he introduced a law that turned contract slaves into slaves for life. These policies, combined with heavy taxes, burdened the Russian people.

Nature also contributed to the chaos through a devastating famine from 1601 to 1603. Extremely poor harvests occurred because summer temperatures often dropped below freezing at night. This environmental disaster caused massive starvation and disease. It is estimated that the famine killed between one-third and two-thirds of the Russian population. The resulting hunger riots and rebellions, such as the Khlopko rebellion of 1603, made the social crisis even harder to manage.

The political instability allowed for the rise of the "false Dmitrys." These were impostors who claimed to be the miraculously rescued Tsarevich Dmitrii. The first, False Dmitry I, emerged from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1603. He gained support from various cossack groups and Polish nobles. In 1605, after the death of Boris Godunov, False Dmitry I entered Moscow and was crowned tsar.

False Dmitry I's reign was short and controversial. He converted to Catholicism and relied heavily on Polish advisors. Many Russians viewed him as a tool of foreign interests. This unpopularity led to an uprising in May 1606. During a violent riot in Moscow, an armed mob killed the tsar. This event led to further civil wars and even more shifts in power. One of the major figures in this struggle was Prince Vasilii Shuiskii, a high-ranking boyar.

The conflict eventually involved foreign powers, specifically the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This led to the Polish-Russian War, during which Russia lost the city of Smolensk. The country was caught in a cycle of internal rebellion and external invasion. It was a period where the very survival of the Russian state was in doubt. The chaos only began to settle when a new direction was chosen by the people's representatives.

The Time of Troubles finally concluded in 1613. A Zemsky Sobor was convened to elect a new leader and restore order. The assembly chose Michael I of the House of Romanov to be the tsar. This election established the Romanov dynasty, which would rule Russia until the February Revolution in 1917. The transition from the Rurik dynasty to the Romanovs marked the end of the Smuta and the beginning of a new era of stability.
