Today, tigers face severe threats that have led to a massive loss of habitat. Since the early 20th century, tigers have lost at least 93% of their historic range. They are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. This is because their range has declined by 53% to 68% since the late 1990s. Major threats include habitat destruction from deforestation and poaching for fur or medicinal parts. Tigers also face human-wildlife conflict when they prey on livestock due to a lack of natural prey. 
Conservation efforts are working to protect the remaining tiger populations. Tigers are now legally protected in all countries where they live. National plans include anti-poaching patrols and population monitoring. Some countries have established wildlife corridors to connect fragmented habitats. Scientists are also planning tiger reintroductions in certain areas. These efforts aim to stabilize the species and protect its role in the natural world.
