Users can connect devices using different topologies, such as hubs or daisy chains. In a daisy chain, devices are connected one after another in a sequence. A single Thunderbolt port can support a chain of up to six devices. There are specific rules for how different types of hardware fit into this chain. For example, a device using the DisplayPort standard must be at the very end of the chain. However, native Thunderbolt devices can be placed anywhere along the line. If a device uses fewer than four PCIe lanes, it still qualifies as a Thunderbolt device. However, it will not be able to use the full speed and capabilities of the interface.
