His machine used a drum with four iron-shod beaters. This drum spun at 200 to 250 revolutions per minute. It knocked the grain out of the corn ears very quickly.

As production increased, farmers began beating the grain with single sticks or striking sheaves against the ground. A more advanced method used by the ancient Egyptians involved spreading loosened sheaves on a circular enclosure of hard ground. They would then drive oxen, sheep, or other animals in circles to tread the grain out.

This enclosure was often placed on elevated ground so the wind could blow away the chaff. In some locations, a contemporary version involves spreading grain on country roads to be threshed by passing vehicle wheels.

To avoid damaging the grain with vehicle wheels, many cultures developed specialized tools. The threshing sledge was a heavy frame mounted with three or more rollers, which were sometimes spiked. These rollers revolved as oxen drew the sledge over the spread-out grain. Similar methods were used by the ancient Greeks and continued into the modern period. In Italy, a tapering roller fastened to an upright shaft was pulled in circles by oxen.

Another common tool was the flail, which consists of a pair of connected sticks used to beat the grain. The flail evolved from the earlier single-stick method and was a primary tool in Northern Europe until at least 1860. In Japan, a tool called a stripper, which looked like a large wooden comb, was used to comb the grain heads off the straw.

Once the grain was beaten out, it had to be cleaned through a process called winnowing. This involved separating the grain from the chaff, which is the dry, protective casing of the seed. Farmers would toss the mixture into the air so the wind carried the light chaff away. The heavier grain would fall back onto the threshing floor. This process also provided an approximate grading, as the best grain fell nearest and lighter grain fell further away. If there was no wind, farmers used a fan to pour the mixture from a vessel. Some barns were even built with large doors facing prevailing winds to assist this process.

Meikle's drum was armed with four iron-shod beaters that struck the corn ears as they protruded from the rollers. This drum revolved at a high speed of 200 to 250 revolutions per minute. The machine then used a concave sieve and a revolving rake with pegs to rub the straw and separate the grain and chaff. This design led to the Scottish "peg-mill," which became a standard type of machine used across the United States for nearly a hundred years. Because high-speed drums in Britain carried risks, the Threshing Machines Act of 1878 was passed to mandate safety guards.

In modern developed areas, threshing is almost entirely performed by a combine harvester. This machine is highly efficient because it harvests, threshes, and winnows the grain all while still in the field. Despite this shift toward automation, the social aspect of threshing survives through tradition. Historically, people held "threshing bees," where the community gathered to help finish the season's work. While the original labor-saving purpose is now obsolete, modern festivals commemorate this history with dances, flea markets, and even hog wrestling.
