It was a time of great change for the land.
Long ago, China was ruled by the Han dynasty. But the Han lost power. This led to a very hard time. Fighting broke out between many leaders.
From 220 to 280 AD, China was split into three kingdoms. These were Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu. For a while, these three groups lived in a stable way.
Life was difficult for many people. There were wars and not enough food. Many people also got sick from plagues. A census in 280 AD showed many fewer people lived in China than before.
Even in hard times, people made great things. Zhuge Liang, a leader in Shu, made a wooden ox. This was like an early wheelbarrow. Ma Jun was a clever engineer in Wei. He made a puppet show that used water power. He also made a tool called a south-pointing chariot. It helped people find their way without a magnet.

The Three Kingdoms was a famous era in Chinese history. It happened after the Han dynasty lost its power. From 220 to 280 AD, China was split into three large parts. These parts were called Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu.

Before the three kingdoms formed, the Han dynasty began to fall apart. This happened because of fighting between leaders and many political problems. In 184 AD, a large group called the Yellow Turbans started a rebellion.
Many people lived through very difficult times during this era. There were many wars between different leaders. People also suffered from famines, which means there was not enough food. Many people became sick from plagues.
Even during these hard years, people invented amazing new things. Zhuge Liang was a leader in Shu who was very smart. He invented something called a wooden ox. This was an early kind of wheelbarrow. In Wei, an engineer named Ma Jun made many clever tools. He built a puppet theatre that used water power. He also made a south-pointing chariot. This tool used special gears to show direction without a magnet.
Today, people still find these stories very exciting. Many writers and artists love the Three Kingdoms. A famous book called Romance of the Three Kingdoms was written long ago.
The Three Kingdoms period was a major era in Chinese history. It occurred between 220 and 280 AD. This era followed the collapse of the Han dynasty. It ended when the Western Jin dynasty reunified China. During this time, three major states competed for control. These states were Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu.
The era began after a long period of decline for the Han dynasty. Starting around 184 AD, the central government lost its authority. This decline was caused by political infighting between imperial relatives and court eunuchs. Eunuchs are officials who served the emperor closely. These groups struggled for power, which left the government weak.
One major event that triggered this chaos was the Yellow Turban Rebellion in 184 AD. This was a massive movement led by Zhang Jiao and his brothers. They belonged to a Taoist movement called the Way of Supreme Peace. The rebels used yellow headbands, which is how they got their name. They hoped to bring prosperity to the world by replacing the old order.
As the Han dynasty fell, powerful individuals took control of large regions. In 189 AD, a general named Dong Zhuo seized control of the capital, Luoyang. He deposed the emperor and replaced him with a different member of the imperial family. This move caused even more fighting among various warlords. Leaders like Cao Cao and Yuan Shao rose to prominence during this time. Eventually, the empire split into the three distinct states of Wei, Shu, and Wu.
Life during the Three Kingdoms was often very difficult for the population. The era was marked by civil wars, widespread famines, and multiple plagues. These hardships caused a massive drop in the number of people living in China. A census taken in 280 AD recorded about 16,163,863 individuals. This was a very small number compared to the Han era. During the Han era, the population was reported to be over 56,486,856 individuals. Even though the census might not be perfectly accurate, it shows how much the population had declined.
Despite the violence, this period saw incredible scientific and mechanical progress. In the state of Shu, the chancellor Zhuge Liang invented the wooden ox. This device is believed to be an early version of the wheelbarrow. In the state of Wei, the engineer Ma Jun created many advanced machines. He designed square-pallet chain pumps to help with garden irrigation. He also built a hydraulic-powered mechanical puppet theatre for Emperor Ming. Additionally, he created the south-pointing chariot. This was a directional tool that used differential gears instead of magnets.
The Three Kingdoms period has had a lasting impact on global culture. The history was recorded by the historian Chen Shou in his work, *Records of the Three Kingdoms*. Later, Pei Songzhi added important annotations to these records in 429 AD. The era has been romanticized in many different forms of art. The most famous version is the novel *Romance of the Three Kingdoms* by Luo Guanzhong.
