To keep these organs safe, the thorax uses a strong frame. This frame is called the thoracic skeleton. It is made of your ribs and your sternum.

Your ribs are numbered from 1 to 12. The first seven ribs attach directly to the sternum. Ribs 8 through 10 are called false ribs because they attach to the rib above them. The last two ribs, 11 and 12, are called floating ribs. They are called this because they have no attachment at the front. This bony cage protects your heart and your aorta.

Scientists use specific landmarks to study the chest. For example, the nipple in a male is usually near the fourth rib. In females, the breast area extends from the second to the sixth rib. Pain can also come from infections like shingles or from simple muscle soreness after new exercise. Even digestive issues can cause a burning feeling in the chest area.

In the world of insects, the thorax is even more complex. Most insects have a thorax composed of three distinct segments: the prothorax, the mesothorax, and the metathorax. Each segment is made of different parts, including the dorsal notum, the lateral pleuron, and the ventral sternum. In most insects, the prothorax never has wings, while the wings are usually found on the mesothorax or metathorax. Some insects, like certain bees and wasps, have a modified thorax called a mesosoma. This happens because their first abdominal segment is fused to the metathorax. Understanding the thorax helps scientists study how different animals move and breathe.
