A king lived long ago.

A king lived long ago.
His name meant "good counsel." But people called him "unready." This was a joke on his name.
Vikings came to attack his land. The king gave them money to leave. This did not stop the raids.
Later, a leader named Cnut took the land. Æthelred had to leave England. He went to a place called Normandy.
He came back to be king again. He died a few years later. It was a very hard time for his people.
Æthelred II was a king of England.
During his rule, Viking armies attacked England. The English did not win many battles. To stop the raids, the king gave money to the Vikings. This was called tribute.
Things became harder for the king. A leader named Swein Forkbeard conquered England in 1013. Æthelred had to flee to Normandy. He came back to rule in 1014. Later, a war broke out in his land. His son, Edmund Ironside, fought against a leader named Cnut.
Æthelred died in April 1016. After he died, his son Edmund tried to keep fighting. But Cnut eventually became the king of all England. Some people think Æthelred was a bad king. Other people say he had some good years in the 990s. During those years, people made great art and books.
Æthelred II was a king who ruled England for many years.

His path to the throne was a difficult one. Before he became king, his older half-brother Edward was killed. This event shocked everyone in the country. Because Æthelred was so young, no one thought he was involved. While he was a child, his mother and other leaders helped run the country. When he grew up in the mid-980s, he chose new advisers. Some of these advisers took land from the church. By the 990s, the king felt regret about these choices. He began to see Viking attacks as a punishment from God.
Life in England was very hard due to Viking raids. For a long time, the English did not win many battles. To stop the fighting, the king gave money to the Vikings. This money was called tribute.

War and change continued through the end of his life. In December 1013, King Swein Forkbeard of Denmark conquered England. Æthelred had to flee to a place called Normandy. He returned to the throne in February 1014 after Swein died. However, a civil war broke out in early 1015. His son, Edmund Ironside, fought against the leaders of the war. The king's health was poor during this difficult time.
Historians have changed how they think about Æthelred over time. For a long time, many thought he was a bad king. They focused on the many problems that happened during his rule. But in the late twentieth century, people began to look closer. They saw that the 990s and early 1000s were actually successful years. During this time, England had great achievements in literature.
Æthelred II was a King of the English who ruled during a period of great transition and conflict. He reigned from March 978 to December 1013, and again from February 1014 until his death in April 1016.

Æthelred's rise to power was marked by political instability and violence. He was the son of King Edgar and Queen Ælfthryth. He came to the throne after the assassination of his older half-brother, King Edward the Martyr, in March 978. The death of Edward deeply shocked the English people. Because Æthelred was only between nine and twelve years old, he was not suspected of the crime. During his minority, the country was managed by his mother and other leading advisers.
As Æthelred grew older, his relationship with his government changed. In the mid-980s, he rejected his childhood advisers and chose new ones. These new leaders persuaded him to grant them land and property. They often took this land at the expense of the church. By the early 990s, the King began to feel regret for these actions. He started to believe that the increasing Viking raids were a form of divine punishment for his persecution of the church.
The Viking threat defined much of his reign. After a generation of peace, minor raids in the 980s escalated into massive attacks by the 990s. Because the English armies were rarely victorious in battle, the King and his advisers used a specific tactic. They paid tribute, which was a sum of money, to the Vikings to convince them to leave England. In 1002, Æthelred ordered the St Brice's Day massacre of Danes. Historians view this event as a sign of his growing paranoia.
Political infighting and foreign invasions eventually weakened the English kingdom. In 1009, a man named Eadric Streona rose to become the most powerful adviser to the King. As Viking raids became more destructive, the English resistance began to fail. In December 1013, King Swein Forkbeard of Denmark conquered England. Æthelred was forced to flee to Normandy. He only returned to the throne in February 1014 after Swein died.
The final years of Æthelred's life were consumed by civil war and family tension. When he returned, he attempted to drive out Swein's son, Cnut. However, in early 1015, civil war broke out. This was fueled when Eadric Streona murdered allies of Æthelred's oldest surviving son, Edmund Ironside. Although Edmund and Æthelred tried to unite against Cnut, suspicion between the father and son made cooperation difficult. Combined with Eadric's treachery and the King's declining health, the defense of England faltered.
Æthelred died in April 1016. His son Edmund continued the war until his own death in December of that year. Following these events, Cnut became the King of all England.
