Link is a hero in a game.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a famous video game.
Link uses a musical instrument called an ocarina. He plays twelve different melodies on it. These songs help him solve puzzles. They also let him travel to new places. Link can also travel through time. He uses the Master Sword to move between being a child and an adult. This change lets him do new things. As an adult, he can use a Fairy Bow. As a child, he can fit into small spaces.
Link fights with a sword and a shield. He also uses bombs and magic spells. The game has many different groups of people. There are the Kokiri in the forest and the Zora, who look like fish. The game was a huge success. It sold more than seven million copies. Many people call it one of the best games ever made.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a famous action-adventure game.

In the game, you control Link from a third-person view. Link uses a sword and a shield to fight. He can also use magic spells, bombs, and projectiles. The game uses a special system called Z-targeting. This helps Link focus on a specific enemy or object. When you use this, the camera follows the target. This makes it easier to fight in a 3D space. The game also uses context-sensitive buttons. These buttons change what they do based on what Link is doing. For example, a button might make Link push a box. If he stands on the box, that same button might make him climb it.
Music is a very important part of the adventure. Link uses a small instrument called an ocarina. He learns twelve different melodies on the Ocarina of Time. These songs help him solve puzzles and move through the world. Playing certain songs can even let him teleport to new places. Link also uses the Master Sword to travel through time. When he pulls the sword from its pedestal, he moves seven years into the future. As an adult, Link can use a Fairy Bow. As a child, he can fit through small gaps.
Creating this huge world was a massive job for Nintendo. The team worked on it starting around 1994. More than 200 people worked on the game. It cost more than $12 million to make. The project was led by five different directors. These included Eiji Aonuma and Yoshiaki Koizumi. Shigeru Miyamoto helped as a producer. Koji Kondo wrote the music for the game. The team even used motion capture to make characters move. They wanted to create something brand new and unprecedented.
Hyrule is filled with many different kinds of people. The Kokiri live in a forest with fairies. The Zora are fish-like creatures who live in the water. The Gorons are rock-eating creatures who live on Death Mountain. In the western desert, you will find the Gerudo people. These people are mostly women. Link also meets Princess Zelda and the evil Ganondorf. The game was a huge hit and sold over seven million copies. It has been played on almost every Nintendo home console since it first came out.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a landmark action-adventure video game.
The gameplay centers on a protagonist named Link within the kingdom of Hyrule. Players navigate a vast, three-dimensional environment through a third-person perspective. Link primarily utilizes a sword and shield for combat. He can also employ magic spells, bombs, and various projectiles. To manage combat in a 3D space, the game introduced a targeting system called "Z-targeting." This mechanic allows Link to lock onto a specific enemy or object. Once locked, the camera follows the target, and Link constantly faces it. This system ensures that projectile attacks are automatically directed without manual aiming.
Another major innovation is the use of context-sensitive buttons. This feature simplifies the control scheme by assigning multiple tasks to a single button. The on-screen display changes to show what a button will do based on Link's surroundings. For example, a button might cause Link to push a box. If Link stands near that same box, the button might instead allow him to climb it. This allows for complex interactions without needing an overwhelming number of buttons. These technical advancements have since become standard in many 3D adventure games.
Music plays a fundamental role in the mechanics of the adventure. Link is given an instrument called an ocarina early in his journey. He eventually acquires the Ocarina of Time, which allows him to play twelve distinct melodies. These songs are essential for solving music-based puzzles and teleporting to different locations. The instrument is also the key to time travel. When Link pulls the Master Sword from its pedestal in the Temple of Time, he is transported seven years into the future. This transition changes Link from a child into an adult. This shift affects gameplay, as adult Link can use a Fairy Bow, while young Link can fit through small passages.
The story takes place in the fictional realm of Hyrule, which features diverse topography. Hyrule Field acts as a central hub connecting various regions. To the east, the Kokiri live in a forest with fairies, while the Zora reside in aquatic environments. In the north lies Hyrule Castle and the Gorons, who live on Death Mountain and consume rocks. The western desert is home to the Gerudo, a population consisting mostly of women. Link's quest is to stop the evil Gerudo king, Ganondorf, from seizing the Triforce. The Triforce is a holy relic that grants godlike power to its holder.
Development of the game was a massive undertaking by Nintendo's Entertainment Analysis & Development division.
Technological constraints shaped how the game was built. Originally, Nintendo planned to use the 64DD disk drive peripheral. However, the team migrated the project to a cartridge to handle high data throughput. This was necessary to stream the many motion-captured animations during gameplay. The game's size was also significant, increasing from an initial 16 megabytes to 32 megabytes. This made it the largest game Nintendo had produced at that time.
