His wife, Tichi Wilkerson Kassel, took over as the editor and publisher after him. Later, many other companies owned the magazine. In 1988, BPI Communications bought it for $26.7 million. In 1994, it was sold again for $220 million to a company called VNU.

The history of the paper includes some very tough times. In the late 1930s, Wilkerson used his column to target certain people. He helped create a list that kept people out of jobs in Hollywood. This was known as the Hollywood blacklist. In 1932, a company called Variety even sued the paper. They said the paper took their information too early. These events show how much competition there is in the news business.

The Hollywood Reporter (THR) is a major American media brand. It focuses on the film, television, theatre, and entertainment industries.

The publication serves as a vital source of news for professionals. It covers everything from industry deals to box-office figures and global business trends. It also provides coverage of red-carpet events, fashion, and film festivals. By reporting on these areas, THR helps the entertainment world function and stay informed.

The publication has undergone significant transformations since its inception. It began in 1930 as a daily trade newspaper. For the first ten years, it appeared Monday through Saturday. By 1940, the schedule shifted to Monday through Friday. In 2010, the company underwent a massive reinvention. It switched from a daily paper to a weekly, large-format print magazine. This new version featured a revamped website to allow for faster news delivery.

This change allowed THR to break news while maintaining a high-quality, glossy print presence.

The history of THR is deeply tied to its founder, William R. "Billy" Wilkerson. He established the paper on September 3, 1930. Wilkerson was known for his influential "Tradeviews" column. He used gossip and sharp articles to generate publicity. This approach caught the attention of major studio bosses. However, it also caused significant conflict. In 1932, the publication Variety sued THR for plagiarism. Variety claimed THR was wiring information from New York to Hollywood to publish it three days before Variety arrived. This rivalry led Variety to launch its own daily Hollywood edition, Daily Variety, in 1933.

Wilkerson’s leadership also involved controversial political actions. During the late 1930s, he used his platform to claim the industry was a communist stronghold. He specifically opposed the Screen Writers Guild, which he called the "Red Beachhead." On July 29, 1946, his column targeted the idea of writers holding copyrights. This column contained names that became part of the Hollywood blacklist. Known as "Billy's list," it included names like Dalton Trumbo and Howard Koch. Eight of the eleven people Wilkerson named were later part of the "Hollywood Ten." These individuals faced blacklisting after 1947 House Un-American Activities Committee hearings. In 2012, the magazine published an investigative piece regarding this role.

Ownership of the publication has changed hands many times through various corporate deals. After Wilkerson died in 1962, his wife, Tichi Wilkerson Kassel, became publisher.

In 1988, Kassel sold the paper to BPI Communications for $26.7 million. BPI was later sold to VNU in 1994 for $220 million. In 2006, a private equity consortium led by Blackstone and KKR acquired THR. This move joined THR with AdWeek and A.C. Nielsen to form The Nielsen Company. Later, in 2009, Prometheus Global Media acquired the brand. Prometheus pledged to invest in the brand to help it grow.

The era of Prometheus Global saw a successful reinvention of the brand. Under CEO Richard Beckman and editorial director Janice Min, the publication became a glossy weekly. This new format was highly successful with a "rarefied demographic." The New York Times noted that the large photos and lush paper stock were very appealing. The success was measurable in specific numbers. Under Min’s leadership, ad sales increased by more than 50 percent. Additionally, website traffic grew by 800 percent. This growth helped THR regain its status as a premier entertainment authority.

Today, the business operations of The Hollywood Reporter are quite complex. As of 2020, the day-to-day operations are handled by a joint venture. This venture is known as PMRC, a partnership between Penske Media Corporation and MRC.

PMRC manages several major brands, including Billboard, Rolling Stone, and Variety. While the ownership structure has shifted, including a move by Todd Boehly to buy back assets in 2022, the brand remains a central pillar of entertainment media. It continues to host major industry events and maintain international editions in several different countries.
