Tethys is mostly made of water ice. It has very little rock. This makes the moon very light. It is the least dense major moon in our solar system. Because of the ice, it is very bright. It is the second-brightest moon of Saturn.

The surface has many big marks. There are many craters from space rocks. The largest is called Odysseus. It is 400 km wide. Tethys also has a giant crack called Ithaca Chasma. This crack is 100 km wide. It is over 2,000 km long. Some parts of the moon are smooth plains. These might be made by ice volcanoes.

It is the fifth-largest moon in Saturn's system. This moon is very special because it is very light for its size. Its density is only 0.98 grams per cubic centimeter. This is the lowest density of all the major moons in our solar system. Because it is so light, we know it is made mostly of water ice.

There is only a tiny bit of rock inside it.

The moon's surface is very bright and reflects a lot of light. It is the second-brightest moon around Saturn, following only the moon Enceladus. This brightness comes from a layer of pure water ice. Tiny ice particles from Saturn's E-ring actually sandblast the surface. This process keeps the moon looking very shiny and white.

Some parts of the moon look darker or even reddish. This happens because of particles from other moons or energy from Saturn's magnetic field. These particles hit the moon as it moves through space.

Many large marks cover the surface of Tethys. The biggest mark is a giant crater named Odysseus. This crater is about 400 kilometers wide. It is so large that it covers nearly two-fifths of the moon. There is also a massive valley called Ithaca Chasma. This trench is 100 kilometers wide and over 2,000 kilometers long. Scientists think this crack might have formed when water inside the moon froze and expanded. This expansion caused the icy crust to break apart.

People first discovered Tethys in 1684. An astronomer named Giovanni Domenico Cassini found it.

He found Tethys at the same time he found the moon Dione. Cassini used a large aerial telescope at the Paris Observatory. He originally named the moons after the French King Louis XIV. Later, a man named John Herschel suggested using names from Greek mythology.

Spacecraft have visited Tethys many times to learn its secrets. The Pioneer 11 probe flew by in 1979. The Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes visited in 1980 and 1981.

Most of what we know comes from the Cassini-Huygens mission. That mission studied the Saturn system from 2004 to 2017. Tethys even has two tiny companion moons named Telesto and Calypso. These small moons orbit near Tethys along its path around the planet.

It is a massive, icy world with a radius of 531 kilometers. This moon is unique because it has a very low density of 0.98 g/cm3. This is the lowest density of any major moon in our Solar System. This low density tells scientists that Tethys is made almost entirely of water ice. It contains only a small fraction of rock within its structure.

Because it is so icy, Tethys is incredibly bright. Its visual albedo, which measures how much light it reflects, is 1.229. This makes it the second-brightest moon in the Saturnian system, following only Enceladus.

The brightness of Tethys is maintained by a constant process of sandblasting. Tiny ice particles from Saturn's E-ring strike the surface. These particles are generated by geysers on the moon Enceladus. This continuous bombardment keeps the surface covered in fresh, bright ice. However, the surface is not perfectly uniform in color or brightness. The leading hemisphere is about 10% to 15% brighter than the trailing hemisphere.

Scientists believe the trailing side becomes darker and redder. This happens because particles from outer moons and plasma from Saturn's magnetosphere hit that side. The magnetosphere is the region around Saturn filled with energetic particles. These electrons and ions strike the moon as it moves through space.

Tethys features several massive geological structures that define its landscape. The most prominent is the Odysseus impact basin. This crater is approximately 450 kilometers in diameter. That size is nearly two-fifths of the entire moon's diameter. The floor of Odysseus is quite flat due to viscous relaxation. This is a process where the icy crust slowly flows over long periods of time. The rim of the crater remains elevated by about 5 kilometers. Near the center, there is a complex of mountains and pits. These massifs rise 6 to 9 kilometers above the crater floor.

Another major feature is a giant rift called Ithaca Chasma. This trench is about 100 kilometers wide and over 2,000 kilometers long. It covers roughly 10% of the moon's total surface area. There are two main theories about how this massive crack formed. One theory suggests Tethys once had a subsurface ocean of liquid salt water. As this water froze, it expanded and cracked the outer icy shell. A second theory involves the impact that created Odysseus. This theory suggests the shock wave fractured the brittle surface. However, data shows Ithaca Chasma is actually older than the Odysseus crater. This makes the impact theory unlikely.

The history of discovering Tethys involves several famous astronomers. Giovanni Domenico Cassini discovered Tethys in 1684.

Space exploration has provided much of our detailed knowledge of this moon. The Pioneer 11 probe approached Tethys in 1979. Both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 visited in 1980 and 1981.

The most significant data came from the Cassini-Huygens mission. This mission studied the Saturnian system from 2004 to 2017. During this time, the spacecraft observed Tethys in great detail. It even observed the moon's complex surface colors and thermal patterns. These observations helped map the temperature and structure of the icy regolith.

Tethys also has a unique relationship with other small bodies. It has two co-orbital moons called Telesto and Calypso. These are known as Trojans because they orbit near Tethys's Lagrange points.

Telesto orbits about 60 degrees ahead of Tethys. Calypso orbits about 60 degrees behind it. These small moons stay in these positions due to the gravitational balance in the orbit. Tethys itself orbits Saturn at a distance of about 295,000 kilometers. It is also locked in an inclination resonance with the moon Mimas. This shows how the different moons in the Saturnian system interact with one another.
