Many other matches played since 1877 have since been awarded Test status.

Famous traditions emerged from these early international competitions. One famous example is The Ashes, which began during an 1882 Australian tour of England. After a surprise Australian victory, the Sporting Times published a mock obituary. It stated that English cricket had died and its ashes would be taken to Australia.

This led to the creation of the famous Ashes urn. The 1884–85 series was also notable as the first to be held over five matches.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) was founded on July 15, 1909. The founding members were England, Australia, and South Africa. The ICC was created to oversee and regulate cricket between these nations. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) helped form the organization. Because of this connection, Lord's became the headquarters for the ICC. In 1926, the ICC expanded by inviting India, New Zealand, and the West Indies to become full members.

Rules and equipment have evolved to meet modern needs. Traditionally, matches were played during daylight hours using a red ball. However, the ICC permitted day/night Tests in 2012 to help increase viewership.

These matches start later in the day and continue into the evening. Because visibility changes at night, players use a pink ball instead of a red one. The first day/night Test took place in November 2015 between Australia and New Zealand.

Today, the sport is organized through major international competitions. There are 12 full-member teams in the ICC that contest Test cricket. The ICC World Test Championship is the premier league for this format. The inaugural season of this championship began in 2019. This tournament serves as the pinnacle for Test cricket, much like other major championships in different sporting formats.
