There are many interesting stories about the name Terengganu. One idea is that it comes from the Malay words for a bright rainbow. Another story involves a group of hunters from Pahang. They found a large animal fang on the ground. They could not name the animal, so they called it a fang of something. This name later changed into Terengganu.

Because of its location by the South China Sea, Terengganu was part of ancient trade routes. In the early 6th century, Chinese seafarers recorded the area. During the Hindu-Buddhist period, a small polity called Tan-Tan existed. Terengganu later came under the influence of the Langkasuka kingdom. By the 7th century, the Srivijaya dynasty took control. This kingdom traded extensively with China, the Khmer Empire, and the Majapahit Empire.

Islam played a vital role in the development of the state. Terengganu was the first Malay state to receive Islam. This is proven by the Terengganu Inscription Stone found in Kuala Berang. This stone contains Jawi alphabet inscriptions. These inscriptions show local laws influenced by Sharia. The stone dates from between 1303 and 1387 CE.

In the 18th century, Terengganu emerged as an independent sultanate. Tun Zainal Abidin became the first sultan in 1724. During the 19th century, the state was a vassal of the Thai Rattanakosin Kingdom. It sent a yearly tribute known as bunga mas to Bangkok. This period was marked by stable government and prosperous trade under Sultan Omar Riayat Shah.

The modern political history of Terengganu involved several shifts in power. In 1909, the Anglo-Siamese Treaty transferred power from Siam to Britain. Terengganu became one of the Unfederated Malay States. This change caused tension and led to uprisings. The Peasant's Rebellion, or Pemberontakan Tani, occurred in 1928. It was led by Abdul Rahman Limbong and was stopped by British military force. During World War II, Japan occupied the state. After the war, British control returned. Terengganu eventually joined the Federation of Malaya in 1948. It became part of Malaysia in 1963.

The state's name, Terengganu, has several interesting theories. One theory says it comes from "terang ganu," meaning "bright rainbow" in Malay. Another story involves hunters from Pahang. They found a large animal fang on the ground. They could not identify the animal, so they called it "taring anu," or "fang of something."

This name eventually evolved into Terengganu. The Chinese community also has a history with the name. They previously used a name that translated poorly. In 2004, they successfully petitioned to change the official Chinese name. The new name translates to "aspiring to a higher level."

Today, Terengganu is famous for its natural beauty and islands. It has the longest coastline in Peninsular Malaysia. The state even holds a record for the cleanest beach in the country. Many popular islands belong to Terengganu. These include Perhentian, Kapas, and Redang islands.
