Urdu is officially recognized as the second language of the state. In various regions, several tribal languages are also spoken by local communities. These include Gondi, Kolami, Koya, and Lambadi. The name "Telangana" itself has interesting theories regarding its origins. One popular theory suggests it comes from "Trilinga desha," meaning the land of three lingas. This refers to three prominent Shaivite shrines located in the region and nearby areas. Another historian, Jayadheer Tirumala Rao, suggests a Gondi origin. He believes the name comes from "Telangadh," which means "south" in the Gondi language.

The history of the region spans thousands of years and involves many empires. One of the earliest political formations was the Aśmaka Mahajanapada, which flourished between 700 BCE and 400 BCE. This was the only southern kingdom among the sixteen great Mahajanapadas of the Iron Age. It was a prosperous kingdom situated along the banks of the Godavari River.

Following the Aśmaka, the Satavahana dynasty dominated the area from 230 BCE to 220 CE. Many other dynasties later ruled, including the Vakataka, Chalukya, and Rashtrakuta. The region experienced a golden age under the Kakatiya dynasty from 1083 to 1323 CE.

Famous rulers like Rudrama Devi and Prataparudra II led during this era. The dynasty eventually fell after attacks by Malik Kafur and the forces of Muhammad bin Tughluq.

In the medieval and early modern periods, different sultanates and empires held power. The Delhi Sultanate and the Bahmani Sultanate ruled the area before the Qutb Shahi dynasty was established in 1518.

Golconda Fort 013.jpg

The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb captured the Golconda fort in 1687 after a year-long siege. Later, the Asaf Jahi dynasty emerged as the rulers of the Hyderabad Deccan. They were known as the Nizams of Hyderabad. During the 17th century, the region had a strong cotton-weaving industry. It produced high-quality muslin and calico for both local use and export. The city of Golconda was also a world-famous center for the diamond trade. Until the late 19th century, the Golconda market was the primary source for the largest diamonds in the world.

The transition to modern governance involved significant political shifts and movements. In 1823, the Nizams ceded certain districts to British India through a subsidiary alliance. This reduced the territory to a landlocked princely state. After India gained independence in 1947, the Hyderabad state joined the Union of India in 1948. This occurred following a military operation known as Operation Polo. In 1956, the Hyderabad State was dissolved, and Telangana was merged with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. However, a peasant-driven movement for a separate state began in the early 1950s. This movement continued for decades until Telangana was officially granted statehood on 2 June 2014.
