The history of TU Berlin is a story of many institutions merging over many decades. The university traces its roots back to the Bauakademie, which was founded in 1799. On April 1, 1879, the Königlich Technische Hochschule zu Berlin was established through a merger. This merger combined the Königliche Gewerbeakademie zu Berlin, founded in 1827, with the Königliche Bauakademie. In 1916, the institution grew again when the Prussian mining academy, created by Carl Abraham Gerhard in 1770, was incorporated. This new addition became the "Department of Mining." In 1927, the Department of Geodesy from the Agricultural College of Berlin was also added. The school underwent many name changes as the political landscape of Germany shifted through the 20th century.

During the 1930s, the university campus underwent significant redevelopment under Nazi plans for a new capital called Germania. This included the construction of a new faculty of defense technology in the Grunewald forest. However, much of this expansion remained unfinished due to the outbreak of World War II. In November 1943, a bombing raid destroyed the north section of the main building.

Operations at the school were eventually suspended on April 20, 1945, due to intense street fighting. After the war, planning for a reopening began in June 1945. The university was officially re-inaugurated on April 9, 1946, under its current name, Technische Universität Berlin.

TU Berlin has a long history of academic innovation and specialized training. One of its most notable achievements was being the first to offer a degree in Industrial Engineering and Management. This program was launched in the winter term of 1926/27 in response to requests from industrialists. These leaders wanted graduates who possessed both technical skills and the management training required to run a company. This makes it one of the oldest programs of its kind in the world. The university also gained prestige in 1899 when it became the first German polytechnic to award doctorates as a standard degree. This was made possible through the work of professors like Alois Riedler and Adolf Slaby.
