Cubillas also spent time playing in the United States. He joined the North American Soccer League (NASL) in 1979. He played five seasons for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. During this time, he scored 59 league goals. He even returned to play for a resurrected version of the Strikers in 1988. After his time in America, he returned to Peru. He played for Alianza Lima again following a tragic air crash in 1987. He even managed the club for a short period in 1988.
Throughout his career, Cubillas reached many impressive milestones. For the national team, he scored 26 goals in 81 appearances. He is tied for 10th place all-time for most goals in a FIFA World Cup with 10 goals.
