The geography of Tartus is defined by its coastal position. The city occupies much of the coastal plain. To the east, the Syrian Coastal Mountain Range rises up. These mountains are primarily composed of limestone. Near the town of Souda, the geology changes to include basalt.

The history of the city began as a Phoenician colony. The settlement was originally known as Antaradus. During the Greco-Roman and Byzantine eras, the city remained a significant religious center. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built there in the 3rd century. In 636, the city was conquered by caliphate armies under Ubadah ibn al-Samit. During the Islamic era, the city saw many shifts in leadership. It later became a key location during the Crusades. The Crusaders called the city Tortosa and captured it in 1099.
In 1152, the Knights Templar took control of Tortosa. They used the city as a military headquarters. Around 1165, the Templars began major construction projects. They built a castle featuring an elaborate keep and a large chapel.
The Ottoman era brought new importance to the city through trade. Tartus became a strategic coastal defense point due to its port. In 1840, British naval forces attacked the citadel during the Syrian War. Despite heavy losses, the British did not capture the fort. The modern era has brought significant changes to the city's administration. In the 1970s, Tartus became its own separate governorate. The population was estimated at 458,327 in 2023. The city has also faced recent challenges during the Syrian Civil War.
Today, the economy of Tartus relies heavily on industry and the sea. The port is a central hub for Syrian trade. In 2005, the port underwent a major expansion to help with Iraqi reconstruction.
