In 1571, he became the chief astronomer, or Müneccimbaşı, for the Sultan. He replaced Mustafa ibn Ali al-Muwaqqit in this role. He worked closely with Sultan Murad III. The Sultan was interested in both astronomy and astrology. Taqi ad-Din suggested that older astronomical works had errors. He proposed building a new observatory to make new observations and fix these mistakes. The Sultan acted as a patron and provided the necessary finances.

The precision of Taqi ad-Din's work was truly extraordinary. He used instruments like the armillary sphere and mechanical clocks. He also used celestial and terrestrial globes. His method for finding star coordinates was highly accurate. In fact, his measurements were more precise than those of Tycho Brahe and Nicolaus Copernicus. He created trigonometric tables using decimal fractions. These tables placed the ecliptic at 23° 28' 40". Today, we know the value is 23° 27". He also calculated the sun's apogee movement as 63 seconds. This was much closer to the modern value of 61 seconds than the measurements of his contemporaries.

Despite his brilliance, the observatory had a very short life. It was completed in 1579. However, it was destroyed by the state on January 22, 1580. This destruction was caused by political problems rather than religious ones. The Grand Vizier, Sinan Pasha, reported that the Sultan and the vizier tried to keep Taqi ad-Din away from the ulama. The ulama were religious scholars who might have brought him to trial for heresy. The observatory was demolished only eleven years after the original edict to build it. This loss meant that many of his resources and findings were gone.

Taqi ad-Din's influence reached Europe through indirect means. Because he wrote so many books, many were lost over time. However, a Dutch professor named Jacob Golius helped preserve some of his legacy. Golius traveled to Istanbul in the seventeenth century. He collected manuscripts, including Taqi ad-Din's work on optics. This work eventually reached the Bodleian Library in England. Taqi ad-Din died in 1585 at the age of 59. His life remains a significant chapter in the history of science and the connection between the Ottoman Empire and the wider world.
