The first was Tanystropheus longobardicus, a smaller species. It possessed tricuspid teeth, which means its teeth had three cusps or points. The second was Tanystropheus hydroides, a larger species. These different tooth structures suggest they may have eaten different types of prey. Some fossils, like T. antiquus from Poland, had proportionally shorter necks. This led some scientists to suggest it might belong to a different genus entirely.
