Tangail has a deep history as a local business center. This importance has been noted since the early 19th century. In 1860, the area was the 4th ranking area of the Greater Mymensingh District. This success was due to the fertile land near the Louhajong River. The city's municipal corporation, or Pourasabha, was established on 1 July 1887.
