You can also play mini-games to keep it happy. If you give good care, your pet grows into a smart adult. If you do not clean up its mess, it might get sick.

Your pet goes through many stages. It moves from a baby to a child and a teen. Later, it becomes an adult. Some pets can even marry other pets!

When you start, an egg appears on the small screen. After you set the clock, the egg wiggles and hatches into a baby. You must watch three important meters: Hunger, Happy, and Training. You feed your pet meals like bread or hamburgers to stop it from being hungry. To keep it happy, you can play fun mini-games. You also have to clean up droppings so your pet does not get sick. If a pet gets sick, you must use the Medicine option to help it.

These digital pets were created in Japan by Akihiro Yokoi and Aki Maita.

The first Tamagotchi was released by Bandai on November 23, 1996. It arrived in the United States a few months later on May 1, 1997. The creators even won an Ig Nobel Prize for their work on the toy. The characters were first drawn in a style called heta-uma. Later, they were turned into pixel art for the screens. This unique look helped the characters become very famous.

Tamagotchi became a massive global success very quickly.

About 40 million units were sold worldwide during its original run. In the United States and Canada alone, 12 million units were sold. The toy was so popular that Bandai struggled to keep up with the demand. At one point, employees were even afraid of theft because the toy was so hard to find. Even though the craze faded in 1998, the brand returned in 2004. The new Connection models allowed pets to talk to each other using infrared light.

Today, Tamagotchi is part of a much larger world.

You can find the characters in video games and other merchandise. Some newer models can even connect to smartphones or tablets. You can use these connections to play games or buy items in a virtual town. Some pets can even marry other pets to start a family. This keeps the cycle of life going from one generation to the next. It is a wonderful way to see how technology can mimic real life.

It is a keychain-sized device housed in an egg-shaped shell. The name is a portmanteau of two Japanese words. The word "tamago" means "egg." The word "watch" refers to how the device was originally intended to be worn.

Players act as caregivers for a small, alien species. The goal is to raise these digital creatures through various life stages. This responsibility creates a sense of companionship between the player and the device.

Gameplay involves managing several specific biological meters. The Hunger meter tracks how much food the pet needs. Players can provide meals, such as bread or hamburgers, or snacks like candy. The Happy meter tracks the pet's emotional state. Players increase happiness by playing mini-games or providing snacks. There is also a Training meter, formerly known as Discipline. Players use the "scold" option if a pet demands attention without being hungry or sad. In newer models, players can also use a "praise" option for good behavior.

The life cycle of a Tamagotchi consists of several distinct stages. These stages include Baby, Child, Teenager, Adult, and sometimes a Special or Senior stage. Each stage lasts for a specific number of days depending on the model. When a pet reaches a new stage, the device plays a jingle and the pet's appearance changes. Care affects how the pet evolves. Better care results in an adult that is smarter, happier, and requires less attention. However, poor care, sickness, or old age can cause a pet to die.

The first model was released by Bandai on November 23, 1996, in Japan. It arrived in the United States on May 1, 1997. The creators even won the 1997 Ig Nobel Prize in economics. The characters were originally drawn in the "heta-uma" style found in teen magazines. These drawings were later converted into pixel art for the digital screens. The egg shape may have been inspired by the popularity of reptiles like snakes at that time.

The original release was a massive global phenomenon. Bandai sold approximately 40 million units worldwide during its initial run. This included about 12 million units in the United States and Canada. The demand was so high that Bandai struggled to produce enough toys. Employees even feared theft and were banned from carrying bags with the Bandai logo. However, the company faced a 6 billion yen financial loss after 1998. This was due to overproduction and miscommunication regarding customer reservations.

In 2004, Bandai revived the brand with the Tamagotchi Connection series. This version introduced infrared communication between devices.

Two players could link their toys so their pets could play, exchange gifts, or even marry. This connectivity allowed for the creation of families and new generations of offspring. Newer models, like the Tamagotchi 4U, use near-field communication to connect to smartphones and tablets. Some models also use QR codes or physical prongs to allow different devices to interact.

Today, the Tamagotchi franchise has expanded into many different media. It is no longer just a handheld toy but includes video games and merchandise. For example, the Nintendo DS game "Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop" sold 1 million copies in Japan by January 2006. The brand has also introduced complex systems like "families" or character groups. In some models, pets can even develop specific skills to earn a career. This evolution shows how a simple digital pet can grow into a complex social and economic system.
