Tapeworms can live inside a person's intestines. These worms are called Taeniasis. 

Most people do not feel sick. Some may have tummy pain or lose weight. You might see small parts of the worm in your stool. Doctors find these worms by studying stool samples.
Pork tapeworm eggs can cause a serious problem. This is called cysticercosis. This happens if someone eats eggs from dirty water or food. The eggs grow into larvae. These larvae move into the blood. They can even reach the brain. This can cause headaches or even seizures.
You can stay safe by cooking meat well. Freezing meat for a long time also helps. Doctors use medicine like praziquantel to treat the worms. About 50 million people deal with these infections globally.
Taeniasis is an infection caused by adult tapeworms living in the intestines. These worms belong to a group called the genus Taenia. 
These infections happen through a specific way it works. A person eats meat that has larvae inside it. This happens if the beef or pork is undercooked. 
Doctors use several ways to find these worms. The main way is by looking at stool samples to find eggs. However, many tapeworm eggs look very similar. To find the exact species, doctors might look at the scolex, which is the head of the worm. They can also look at the body segments. Some scientists use a special test called PCR to find certain genes. Another test called EITB is very good at finding the Asian tapeworm. It looks for a specific protein called a 21.5 kDa band. This test is very sensitive for that specific worm.
There are important facts about where these worms live. Taeniasis is most common in the developing world. It is found often in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. 
We can prevent these infections by following simple rules. The best way is to cook meat thoroughly. For example, cooking beef at 56 °C for 5 minutes can kill the cysts. You can also freeze meat at -10 °C for several days to stay safe.

The life cycle of a tapeworm follows a specific biological chain. It begins when a person consumes undercooked meat that contains larvae. Once inside the human body, the worms settle in the lumen, which is the inner space of the intestine. There, the adult worms live for years and acquire nutrients directly from the host. The worms eventually release gravid proglottids, which are body segments filled with fertilized eggs. These segments leave the body through feces. If an intermediate host, such as a pig or a cow, consumes these eggs, the cycle restarts. The eggs hatch in the animal's duodenum and become larvae. These larvae then penetrate the intestinal wall to enter the bloodstream. Eventually, they settle in muscles, the liver, or the lungs, where they develop into a fluid-filled cyst called a cysticercus.
There are three primary types of *Taenia* that infect humans. The first is *Taenia saginata*, known as the beef tapeworm, which is contracted by eating undercooked beef. The second is *Taenia solium*, the pork tapeworm, which comes from contaminated undercooked pork. The third is *Taenia asiatica*, the Asian tapeworm, which is also linked to contaminated pork. Each species has different impacts on the body. While *T. saginata* is usually asymptomatic, heavy infections can cause diarrhea, constipation, and even allergic reactions. *T. asiatica* is also mostly asymptomatic, though it is specifically found in East Asian regions. 
A major complication arises specifically with the pork tapeworm, *T. solium*. If a human accidentally eats the eggs of *T. solium*—rather than the larvae in meat—they can develop cysticercosis. This often happens through contaminated water, soil, or food, or via contaminated hands. Once the eggs are ingested, the larvae enter the bloodstream and invade host tissues. This can lead to severe neurological problems. These include headaches, seizures, dizziness, and even blindness. In serious cases, it can cause hydrocephalus, meningitis, or death. This makes *T. solium* the most frequent and severe disease caused by any tapeworm.
Diagnosing taeniasis can be difficult because many tapeworm eggs look similar under a microscope. Doctors primarily use stool samples to identify eggs, but they often need more advanced methods to find the specific species. To identify the exact type, scientists may examine the scolex, which is the head of the worm, or the gravid proglottids. They might use a Ziehl–Neelsen stain, though this is not always reliable. More advanced techniques include PCR, which detects specific genes, or Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). For the Asian tapeworm, doctors use an enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB). This test is highly effective because it identifies a specific 21.5 kDa protein band unique to *T. asiatica*.
Prevention relies heavily on food safety and sanitation. The most effective method is cooking meat thoroughly to kill any larvae. For example, cooking beef viscera at 56 °C for five minutes destroys cysticerci. Freezing meat at −10 °C for several days is also a safe method. Beyond cooking, improving sanitation and pig-raising practices helps prevent the cycle from continuing. It is important to prevent human feces from contaminating pig feed. 
Taeniasis is found globally, though its prevalence varies by region. It is most common in the developing world, particularly in parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. *T. saginata* is frequently found in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. *T. asiatica* is restricted to East Asian countries like China, Indonesia, and Thailand. Even in countries with strict sanitation, like the United States, the infection occurs at low levels. In the U.S., there are fewer than 1,000 cases annually, yet about 25% of cattle sold are still infected. This shows how these parasites remain a persistent part of the global biological landscape.
