The name "Szeged" has several possible origins. Some scholars believe it comes from Partiscum. This was a Roman colony founded in the 2nd century. The name might also relate to the Hungarian word for "corner." This could describe the turn of the Tisza River. Other theories suggest it means "island." A third theory links the name to a word for "dark blond." This might describe the water where the Tisza and Maros rivers merge. In many other languages, the name uses a suffix like "-in." For example, it is known as Szegedin in some regions.

In 1498, it was raised to free royal town status. The Ottoman Army pillaged the city in 1526. They occupied it fully in 1543.
