They wanted more democracy and freedom from their leaders. These leaders were part of the Ba'athist regime. Bashar al-Assad was the leader of this government.

The war grew because of how the government responded to the people. The Assad regime used lethal force against the protesters. This caused many people to leave the government. In December 2024, the war reached a major turning point. Rebel groups launched a big offensive that moved very quickly. They captured the city of Aleppo in only three days. This gave the revolutionaries a lot of momentum. Bashar al-Assad fled the country and went to Moscow.

People held large-scale protests and pro-democracy rallies across the country. They were unhappy with the Ba'athist regime led by Bashar al-Assad. This regime had been in power for many years.

The conflict escalated because of the government's reaction to the protests. The Assad regime used lethal force against the demonstrators. This response caused many people to defect from the government. Armed opposition groups began to form to fight the regime. What started as a civilian uprising eventually became a full-scale civil war. This war lasted for almost 14 years.

Many different factions fought for control over Syrian territory. The Syrian Arab Armed Forces fought to maintain the Assad government. They received significant military and financial support from Iran and Russia. Iran launched a military intervention in 2013. Russia followed with its own intervention in 2015.

On the other side, anti-Assad forces received arms and training from Turkey, Qatar, and a United States-led program. These groups included the Free Syrian Army.

Other groups also fought for their own specific goals. In 2014, the Islamic State (IS) seized control of Eastern Syria and Western Iraq. This led a United States-led coalition to launch an aerial bombing campaign. This coalition also provided support to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SDF is a Kurdish-dominated coalition led by the People's Defense Units (YPG).

Additionally, Turkey launched an invasion of northern Syria in 2016. Turkey established the Syrian National Army (SNA) to fight both ISIS and pro-Assad forces.

The war was marked by extreme violence and humanitarian crises. The use of chemical weapons was a deadly feature of the war. This was most often done by Syrian government forces. The Ghouta sarin attack was a notable example of this.

The fighting also caused a massive refugee crisis. Millions of people fled Syria to find safety in neighboring countries. Many went to Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan. A large number also moved to Europe, with Germany accepting over 500,000 Syrians since 2011.

A major turning point occurred in late 2024. In November 2024, HTS and the SNA launched a major offensive. They captured the city of Aleppo in just three days. This gave the revolutionaries momentum across the whole country. HTS captured Hama and moved toward Homs. On December 8, 2024, Bashar al-Assad fled to Moscow. The city of Homs fell to HTS, and southern rebels entered Damascus.

The war changed the political structure of the nation. In January 2025, a new government was announced in Damascus. Ahmed al-Sharaa, the former leader of HTS, was appointed president. The new government decided to dissolve several militias. These groups were integrated into the Syrian Ministry of Defense. However, new challenges appeared shortly after. A Druze insurgency formed in the Suweida Governorate following clashes with the government.
