Long ago, Sweden was a great power.

A king named Gustavus Adolphus helped it grow. Later, the land grew even more. Sweden became one of the biggest lands in Europe.
Sweden had many cities near the water. The sea helped connect all the lands. This made the empire very strong.
But things changed over time. Wars made the land smaller. Sweden lost much of its power.
It is interesting to see how lands change. We can still learn about this history today.
From 1611 to 1721, Sweden was a great power in Europe.

Sweden reached its largest size under King Charles X Gustav. In 1658, he won a war against Denmark-Norway. This gave Sweden much more land. At this time, Sweden was the third largest area in Europe. It was only smaller than Russia and Spain. The Baltic Sea helped connect all these lands.
But the empire began to face hard times. King Charles XII led a campaign in Russia. He suffered a big defeat at the Battle of Poltava. This loss stopped Sweden from gaining more land. By 1721, the empire was much smaller. Sweden lost its power and its many lands.
The Swedish Empire was a time when Sweden was a very strong land in Europe.

Sweden grew its power through many wars and clever leaders.
Leaders had to manage many different lands and people. After Gustavus Adolphus died in 1632, noble families often helped rule. They acted as regents for kings who were still very young. Later, Queen Christina faced big money problems. Her spending brought the state close to bankruptcy. This caused many people to feel unhappy. King Charles X Gustav later worked to fix these issues. He was a soldier but also a smart politician. He helped bring unity back to the country.

Eventually, the empire began to lose its strength.
The Swedish Empire was a period when Sweden became a major European great power.

Sweden's rise to power began with King Gustavus Adolphus, who took the throne in 1611.
After the Thirty Years' War ended, the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 granted Sweden new lands.
Managing such a large empire required strong domestic leadership. After Gustavus Adolphus died in 1632, high nobility often ruled as regents for young monarchs. For example, the Oxenstierna family held power for long periods. Queen Christina later faced massive financial difficulties due to her spending. This brought the state close to bankruptcy and caused public unrest.

Despite its size, the empire faced constant challenges from its neighbors. The Baltic Sea acted as a bond between many different territories. The empire included all the islands in the Baltic, except for the Danish group. The capital, Stockholm, sat at the center of these widely dispersed lands. The second largest city was Riga, located across the sea. However, the empire was not very crowded. It had about 2,500,000 people, which was only a quarter of modern Sweden's population. This meant there were only about 2.3 people per square kilometer.
The decline of the empire began during the Great Northern War.
