He was born in a small village. He learned many holy books when he was young. He traveled across India for many years.
He taught people to live good lives. He told them to be kind and not to hurt animals. He helped the poor and women too. 
Many followers believe he was a god. They use a special name to pray. This group is called the Swaminarayan Sampradaya.
He also built many beautiful temples. People still follow his ways today.

At age 11, he left home to travel. He took the name Nilkanth Varni. He traveled through India and Nepal for seven years.
Many followers believe he was a form of God. He taught people to live good lives. He told them to be kind to all. He spoke against meat, alcohol, and drugs. He also worked to help women and the poor. 

Swaminarayan was a spiritual leader who founded a tradition called the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. 

His life began with a long journey of learning. He was born Ghanshyam Pande on 3 April 1781 in Chhapaiya. 
In 1799, his travels ended in the village of Loj in Gujarat. There, he met a senior disciple named Muktanand Swami. This meeting led him to meet a teacher named Ramanand Swami. In 1800, Ramanand Swami gave him the name Sahajanand Swami. Before Ramanand Swami died, he named Sahajanand Swami as his successor. This change helped the group become the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. After a gathering where he taught a special mantra, he became known as Swaminarayan.
Swaminarayan established many important rules and buildings for his followers. He wrote a book of rules called the Shikshapatri in 1826. He built six mandirs, which are temples, for people to worship. The first Swaminarayan Mandir was built in Ahmedabad on land from the British government. 
His teachings touched many parts of daily life. He told his followers to avoid meat, alcohol, and drugs. He also spoke against animal sacrifices and criminal acts. Swaminarayan worked to help women and the poor in society.

Nilkanth Varni traveled across India and parts of Nepal for seven years. He searched for an ashram that practiced a correct understanding of Vedanta, Samkhya, Yoga, and Pancaratra. To test these places, he asked five specific questions regarding Vaishnava Vedanta categories. During his travels, he mastered Astanga yoga, which is an eightfold yoga practice. He studied under an aged yogic master named Gopal Yogi for nine months. In Nepal, he reportedly met King Rana Bahadur Shah and cured a stomach illness. This event led the king to free all imprisoned ascetics.
His journey concluded in 1799 in the village of Loj, located in Gujarat. 
Swaminarayan established many formal structures for his growing community. In 1826, he wrote a scriptural tradition known as the Shikshapatri. 
His teachings provided strict guidance for a pious life. He taught that followers must conquer four elements: dharma, bhakti, gnana, and vairagya. Bhakti refers to devotion, while gnana is knowledge. Vairagya means detachment. He forbade the consumption of meat, alcohol, and drugs. He also spoke against adultery, suicide, and animal sacrifices. Swaminarayan sought to improve society by performing reforms for women and the poor. 
Swaminarayan maintained respectful relationships with many different groups. He met with the Lord Bishop of Calcutta, Reginald Heber, in 1825.
