For centuries, people were confused about how swallows survived the winter. Ancient thinkers like Aristotle believed swallows hibernated. Even in 1789, the observer Rev. Swallows vary greatly in size and physical appearance. The smallest species by weight is the Fanti sawwing, which has a mean mass of only 10 grams. In contrast, the purple martin and southern martin are the heaviest, both weighing more than 100 grams on average. Most species have glossy dark blue or green feathers on their upper bodies. Many have white or rufous, which is a reddish color, on their underparts. Tail shape also varies, ranging from square-ended to deeply forked. In barn swallows, the male's tail is 18% longer than the female's. This is a form of sexual dimorphism, where males and females look different.

These birds occupy a wide variety of habitats and exhibit complex social behaviors. They can be found in grasslands, marshes, mangroves, and even urban areas. For instance, a 2024 study by Drew Schield and collaborators provided new data on their genus-level relationships. By studying how swallows adapt to different environments, researchers gain insight into how specialized flight and nesting behaviors evolve in the natural world.
