He lived from 182 to May 252 AD. He is remembered as a wise and outgoing leader. Historical records describe him as a tall man with an oblong face and bright eyes. He was known for his sense of humor and for playing tricks. Most importantly, Sun Quan was a master of delegation. He had a unique ability to recognize the strengths of his subordinates. He treated his officials like family members. This skill allowed him to build a loyal and highly capable administration.

Sun Quan's early life was shaped by the instability of the Han dynasty. His father, Sun Jian, was a military leader and a descendant of the famous strategist Sun Tzu.

After his father died in the early 190s, the family moved between several cities along the lower Yangtze River. Sun Quan's elder brother, Sun Ce, eventually built a powerful warlord regime in the Jiangdong region. Sun Quan grew up serving his brother during various conquests. By the age of 14, he was already serving as a magistrate in Yangxian County. By 199 AD, he had reached the rank of Colonel. He worked closely with his brother to expand their influence across the region.

In 200 AD, Sun Quan's life changed when Sun Ce was killed during an assassination attempt.

At only 18 years old, Sun Quan inherited the lands southeast of the Yangtze River. Many leaders in the region doubted a teenager could maintain such a large territory. Some officials even defected to rival warlords like Cao Cao. However, senior officers like Zhou Yu and Zhang Zhao chose to support him. Sun Quan quickly proved his capability by defeating the defector Li Shu to regain Lujiang. He also accepted the title of General Who Attacks Barbarians. He relied on his mother, Lady Wu, for encouragement during these difficult early years.

As his power grew, Sun Quan focused on securing his borders and expanding his territory. He launched several campaigns against the Shanyue, which were hill tribes living in the southern regions. In 206 AD, his forces captured more than 10,000 people from Shanyue fortresses. He also sought revenge against Huang Zu, a military leader who had killed his father. In 208 AD, Sun Quan's forces finally defeated Huang Zu in battle. This victory allowed Sun Quan to take control of the Jiangxia region. These successes helped prepare his state for much larger conflicts with northern rivals.

The most famous moment of his career was the Battle of Red Cliffs in late 208 AD.

The northern warlord Cao Cao led a massive army of approximately 220,000 men to conquer the south. Sun Quan's forces were much smaller, with only about 30,000 soldiers. His advisors were divided on whether to surrender or fight. Eventually, Sun Quan chose to fight alongside his ally, Liu Bei. They used a brilliant strategy involving fire and naval strength. By setting Cao Cao's ships on fire, the allied forces achieved a decisive victory. This battle prevented Cao Cao from quickly unifying all of China.

Sun Quan's political status evolved through several stages of independence. Initially, he was a nominal vassal to the Wei kingdom. However, tensions rose when the Wei ruler, Cao Pi, demanded that Sun Quan send his son, Sun Deng, as a hostage. Sun Quan refused this demand. In November 222 AD, he declared formal independence by changing his era name. He ruled as the King of Wu until May 229 AD. At that time, he officially declared himself the Emperor of Wu. This transition marked the full establishment of the Eastern Wu empire.

Despite his successes, Sun Quan faced severe internal challenges later in his life. After the death of his original heir, Sun Deng, a bitter power struggle broke out. Two factions emerged to support different successors: Sun He and Sun Ba. This conflict involved many high-ranking officials and caused great instability. Sun Quan eventually settled the dispute with harsh punishments. He exiled Sun He and forced Sun Ba to commit suicide. This period of internal strife was a dark chapter in his long reign. It showed the difficulty of maintaining order within a growing imperial family.

Sun Quan died in May 252 AD at the age of 70. He held the longest reign of all the founders of the Three Kingdoms. He was succeeded by his son, Sun Liang. His ability to manage complex systems of government and military command left a lasting legacy. He successfully navigated the transition from a small warlord regime to a major empire. His reign ensured that the state of Wu remained a dominant force in Chinese history for decades.
