Bose was born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack. He grew up in a wealthy Bengali family in the Bengal Presidency. His father, Janakinath Bose, was a successful lawyer and government pleader. His mother, Prabhabati Bose, was the anchor of the large family. Subhas was the ninth of 13 children. He received an Anglo-centric education at a Protestant European School. This school focused on English, Latin, and British history. At home, the family spoke Bengali and practiced Hindu traditions. This created a dual influence of Western logic and Indian culture in his life.

Bose was a highly capable student who excelled in many academic areas. He studied philosophy at the historic Presidency College in Calcutta. During his college years, he became involved in student journalism and debates. In 1916, he was expelled from the college following an incident involving a professor. Despite this setback, he continued his studies at Scottish Church College. He earned a B.A. with first-class honors in philosophy in 1918. Later, he traveled to England to take the Indian Civil Service examination. He passed the first exam with distinction. However, he chose not to take the final exam because he felt nationalism was a higher calling.

In 1921, Bose returned to India to join the Indian nationalist movement. He became a leader within the Indian National Congress. He worked closely with Jawaharlal Nehru and later with Mahatma Gandhi. Bose served as the Congress president in 1938 and was re-elected in 1939. However, deep disagreements soon emerged between Bose and other Congress leaders. They disagreed on the future of British India and its princely states. The leadership also grew uncomfortable with Bose's views on non-violence. Because of these tensions, Bose resigned from his position and was eventually ousted from the party.

During World War II, Bose sought international support for India's independence. In April 1941, he arrived in Nazi Germany. The German leadership offered some sympathy for the cause of Indian independence. Bose helped establish a Free India Centre in Berlin using German funds. He also helped lead the Free India Legion, which consisted of 3,000 Indian prisoners of war. In 1942, Bose decided to move to Southeast Asia to find new allies. He traveled by German submarine to reach Japan. During this time, his companion Emilie Schenkl gave birth to their daughter.

In 1943, Bose revamped the Indian National Army (INA) with Japanese support. The INA was composed of Indian prisoners of war captured during the Battle of Singapore. Bose declared a Provisional Government of Free India, also known as Azad Hind. This government was nominally presided over by Bose on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. While Bose was a charismatic leader, the Japanese viewed him as militarily unskilled. By late 1944, the British Indian Army began reversing Japanese attacks on India. The conflict resulted in heavy losses, with nearly half of the Japanese forces and half of the INA contingent killed. The remaining INA forces were eventually driven back and surrendered.

Bose attempted to escape to Manchuria to find support in the Soviet Union. On August 18, 1945, he died from third-degree burns after a plane crash in Taiwan. His death left many Indians in shock, and some even doubted the crash had occurred. The Indian National Congress praised his patriotism but rejected his specific tactics. The British Raj attempted to prosecute 300 INA officers for treason. However, widespread opposition eventually led the British to change their approach toward decolonization. Today, Bose is remembered as a vital figure in the struggle for Indian sovereignty.
