People have studied these weather patterns for a long time. The English word for storm comes from the Proto-Germanic word *sturmaz*. This word means noise or tumult. We also use the word tempest, which comes from French. Scientists use different names to describe specific types of storms. For example, a blizzard needs gale-force winds and heavy snow. A blizzard also requires temperatures below about -10 degrees Celsius.
