The composition of the rock is complex. While often called a pink granite dome, it actually contains quartz monzonite, granite, and granodiorite. The rock includes minerals like quartz, plagioclase feldspar, microcline, and muscovite. It also contains smaller amounts of biotite and tourmaline. Some tourmaline exists as black, skeletal crystals. Other large, euhedral pegmatitic tourmaline crystals are found in felsic dikes. The granite also contains xenoliths, which are pieces of foreign rock trapped in the magma. This geological event also created Panola Mountain and Arabia Mountain in DeKalb County.

The summit of the mountain offers a unique ecosystem. The top is a landscape of bare rock and rock pools.

These pools form when rainwater gathers in eroded depressions. They are called vernal pools. These pools host rare species like clam shrimp and fairy shrimp. These tiny shrimp use cryptobiosis to survive. This means their eggs, or cysts, stay dormant in dry pools for years. They only emerge when the rainy season returns. The summit also hosts rare plants like black-spored quillwort and pool sprite.

Visitors can reach the top via a walk-up trail on the west side.

Alternatively, they can use the Skyride, which is an aerial tram.

From the summit, one can see the Atlanta skyline and Kennesaw Mountain. On clear days, the Appalachian Mountains are visible. The lower slopes are heavily wooded. The rare Georgia oak was first discovered at the summit. In the fall, Confederate yellow daisies grow in rock crevices. More than 120 types of wildflowers have been identified here.

The history of the site includes many layers of social and political tension. In 1915, William J. Simmons founded the reborn Ku Klux Klan atop the mountain.

The mountain has also been a site for controversial displays. In 1963, a replica plantation was opened.

This site featured slave cabins moved from the Graves Plantation. The park was purchased by the state of Georgia in 1958 for $1,125,000. This purchase was intended to create a memorial to the Confederacy. Today, the park remains a major destination with complex historical ties.
