The name "stock car" comes from the fact that they used production models. These were cars that regular people could buy at a dealer. To be allowed to race, a model had to have sold at least 500 units. This rule is called homologation. In those early years, the cars were so similar to street cars that drivers often drove them to the race track themselves. This meant the cars you saw on the track looked just like the ones on the road.

This way of racing has a very interesting history.

It grew out of the 1920s during the Prohibition era. Back then, moonshine runners needed fast cars to outrun the authorities. They made their vehicles look ordinary so they would not attract attention. Eventually, these runners began to organize races to challenge one another. In 1948, Bill France Sr. saw that different tracks had different rules. He held a meeting at the Streamline Hotel to form NASCAR. This helped create a unified set of rules for everyone to follow.

As technology improved, the cars changed to become much faster.

In the 1960s, makers built special edition cars to help them win. Some cars, like the Dodge Daytona, used radical shapes to move through the air. These were known as aero-cars. Because they were so fast, NASCAR had to change rules to keep drivers safe. Today, the cars are not "stock" in the old way. They are custom-built machines with very powerful V8 engines. These engines can produce between 860 and 900 horsepower at speedway tracks.

Modern racing vehicles are built for extreme performance. They are no longer the "stock" cars of the past. These machines use a body template to resemble current street models. However, the chassis and running gear are custom-built for racing. They do not resemble ordinary automobiles at all. Most top-level cars use naturally aspirated V8 engines. These engines produce massive power, often between 860 and 900 horsepower.

On superspeedway tracks like Daytona International Speedway, these engines allow for incredible velocities. In 2007, driver Russ Wicks set a speed record in a NASCAR-spec Dodge Charger. He achieved this at the Bonneville Speedway.

It was the first postwar modern overhead valve engine available to the public. This created a "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" culture. Manufacturers realized that racing success could drive high car sales.

As technology advanced, the relationship between manufacturers and racing changed. In the 1960s, carmakers produced "special edition" models to satisfy homologation rules. These were high-performance versions of base models. For example, Ford sold enough aerodynamic "sport-roof" Galaxies to qualify them for racing. In 1963, NASCAR restricted engines to a maximum displacement of 7.0 liters. This was also the limit for using only two valves per cylinder. Manufacturers like Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors competed fiercely to build the best engines. This era saw the rise of legendary drivers like Richard Petty. Petty won 27 of 48 races in 1967 using a Plymouth Belvedere.

Aerodynamics became a major focus as speeds increased. Some cars, known as "aero-cars," featured radical body shapes. The Dodge Daytona used a pointed nose and a wing for stability. This was necessary to remain stable at speeds over 200 miles per hour.

However, these high speeds caused safety concerns. NASCAR feared that tire technology could not handle the extreme forces. They changed the rules in 1970 to require more cars be sold to the public. This was meant to delay the use of extreme aerodynamic bodies. Eventually, NASCAR adopted restrictor plates to limit engine power and manage top speeds.

Today, stock car racing is a massive professional industry. The sport underwent a major shift in 1972 when R.J. Reynolds became the major sponsor. This changed the name to the Winston Cup. This infusion of money transformed the entire nature of the sport. Since 1992, the cars have moved further away from true street models. They now feature sleeker shapes and grounded type spoilers. While they look like the cars in a showroom, they are highly engineered racing tools. The sport continues to evolve through better engineering and changing safety regulations.
