He spent all 22 seasons of his National Hockey League (NHL) career playing for the Detroit Red Wings. Because of his incredible skill and leadership, he is a sports icon in Detroit. Many fans affectionately call him "Stevie Y" or "The Captain." He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame. Yzerman is recognized as one of the greatest players to ever play the game.

His journey to stardom began with a unique path to the NHL. Born in Cranbrook, British Columbia, Yzerman played junior hockey for the Peterborough Petes. In the 1983 NHL entry draft, the Detroit Red Wings selected him fourth overall. At the time, the team's management had originally wanted to draft Pat LaFontaine. However, after seeing Yzerman in training camp, they knew he was a tremendous talent. In his rookie season, he scored 39 goals and 87 points. He also became the youngest player to play in an NHL All-Star Game at age 18. This specific record stood for 27 years.

Leadership became the defining part of Yzerman's career. On October 7, 1986, coach Jacques Demers named him captain of the Red Wings. This made him the youngest captain in the history of the team. He held this position for two decades, dressing as captain for over 1,300 games. This is the record for the longest-serving captain in North American major league sports history. His leadership helped the team through many different eras and coaching changes. He eventually became known as one of the best two-way forwards in hockey history.

A two-way forward is a player who excels at both scoring goals and playing defense. Early in his career, coach Scotty Bowman pushed Yzerman to focus more on defense. Although they had a strained relationship at first, Yzerman adapted his style. He became so skilled at defending that he won the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2000. This award is given to the league's best defensive forward. He also won the Lester B. Pearson Award in 1989, which is given to the most outstanding player as voted by the players.

The team won the Cup in 1997, 1998, and 2002. In 1998, he won the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the most valuable player in the playoffs. He faced many physical challenges during these years. He suffered a major knee injury in 1988 and underwent an osteotomy, which is a type of bone realignment surgery, later in his career. In 2004, a deflected shot broke his orbital bone and scratched his cornea. Despite these injuries, he won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for his perseverance in 2003.

His success extended to international competition while representing Team Canada. In 2002, he won an Olympic gold medal. This achievement made him one of the few players to win both a Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal in the same year. Yzerman also moved into management for international teams. He served as the general manager for Team Canada at the 2007 IIHF World Championship. He was later appointed executive director for the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics. Under his leadership, Team Canada won gold medals in both of those Olympic years.

After retiring as a player in 2006, Yzerman continued his work in hockey management. He served as the general manager for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He is currently the executive vice president and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. His impact on the Detroit franchise is immense. He ranks second in almost every major offensive category for the Red Wings behind Gordie Howe. His number 19 jersey is retired at the arena to honor his legacy.
