Stephen was born in France around the year 1092. 


In 1120, a ship called the White Ship sank. 
When Henry I died in 1135, Stephen became King of England. But his cousin, Empress Matilda, also wanted to rule. 

Eventually, the fighting had to stop. Matilda's son, Henry II, arrived to claim the throne. 
Stephen of Blois was a man who became the King of England. 
Stephen grew up in a very important family in France. 

As a young man, Stephen lived in the court of his uncle. 


When King Henry I died in 1135, Stephen took the throne. 


Eventually, the two sides decided they needed to find peace. 
Stephen of Blois was the King of England from 1135 until his death in 1154. 
Stephen was born in the County of Blois in central France around 1092 or 1096. 

As a young man, Stephen became part of the court of his uncle, King Henry I.

The war saw many shifts in power and intense battles. In 1141, Stephen was captured at the Battle of Lincoln. He lost control of Normandy during this time. He was only released after his wife and a commander named William of Ypres captured the rival leader, Robert of Gloucester. 
By 1153, the situation reached a turning point. The Empress's son, Henry II, invaded England to claim his rights.
