Life for Banach was complicated by the political upheavals of World War II. When Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union invaded Poland, the academic landscape changed drastically. In 1941, all universities were closed, and Banach worked at the Typhus Research Institute. This employment provided protection for him and his son during a very dangerous time. After the Soviet Red Army recaptured Lviv in 1944, Banach attempted to resume his academic work. However, he was diagnosed with lung cancer in early 1945.
