Cans have a long history. In 1810, a man named Peter Durand got a patent for the idea. Later, two men named Bryan Donkin and John Hall made the first factory. They made cans for the Royal Navy. By 1820, people used cans for seeds and gunpowder too.

Early cans were sealed with a metal mix called solder. This mix often had lead in it. Lead can be bad for health. To fix this, Max Ams made a new design in 1888. This was a sanitary can. It kept the solder on the outside so it did not touch the food.

Today, most cans are made of steel. Many have a thin layer of plastic inside. This is called an epoxy coating. It stops the food from touching the metal. Some linings contain a chemical called BPA.

However, the materials used in cans present certain health considerations. Early solder contained lead, which is harmful to human health. Lead can specifically interfere with brain development in infants and children. Consequently, US manufacturers voluntarily eliminated lead seams in 1991.
