Most stalactites form in limestone caves. Water picks up bits of rock as it moves through the ground. This water travels to the edge of a cave roof. It drips down. When the drop hits the air, it lets out a gas called carbon dioxide. This change makes the rock bits stay behind.

You can find them in natural limestone caves or hot springs. They also grow in man-made places like bridges or mines. These shapes are often called speleothems when they are in caves. A stalactite is made of material that can dissolve in water. This includes minerals, mud, sand, or even amberat from pack rats.

When a shape grows from the floor instead, we call it a stalagmite. If they meet in the middle, they form a pillar.

Most stalactites grow in limestone caves through a slow process. First, rainwater picks up carbon dioxide from the air. This water dissolves limestone rock to create a calcium bicarbonate solution. The liquid travels through the rock until it reaches a cave ceiling.

When the drop hits the air, it releases the gas. This causes the calcium carbonate to stay behind as a solid. Each drop leaves a tiny ring of calcite on the edge. Many drops create a thin, hollow tube called a soda straw. If the tube gets blocked, the water flows over the outside. This builds a thicker, cone-shaped stalactite.

Different kinds of stalactites form in very different ways. Lava stalactites form in lava tubes while the rock is still molten. These grow very fast in just hours or weeks.

Finally, calthemite stalactites grow on concrete structures like bridges. They form when water reacts with the calcium in cement.

Scientists and explorers have found many interesting records of these shapes. The Jeita Grotto in Lebanon has a very long limestone stalactite. Some people say it is the longest in the whole world. Another famous one is in the Gruta Rei do Mato in Brazil. In Ireland, Doolin Cave has a very impressive stalactite too. It is held up by a very thin piece of calcite.

Even on concrete, these shapes grow quickly. A soda straw on a bridge can grow 2 mm every day.

Learning about stalactites helps us understand how the Earth changes. They show us how water and gas work together to build stone. The word itself comes from a Greek word meaning "dripping."

When these formations occur in caves, they are called speleothems. A stalactite is made of any material that is soluble and can be deposited. This includes minerals, mud, peat, pitch, sand, and even amberat, which is crystallized urine from pack rats.

While they are most famous in caves, they can also form from lava, ice, or even concrete.

Most stalactites form in limestone caves through a specific chemical process. It begins when water containing carbon dioxide dissolves limestone rock. This creates a calcium bicarbonate solution. The solution travels through the rock until it reaches an edge, such as a cave roof.

When the drop touches the cave air, the chemical reaction reverses. The carbon dioxide degasses, or leaves the solution, into the atmosphere. This causes calcium carbonate to precipitate, which means it turns back into a solid. Each drop leaves a tiny ring of calcite behind. Over time, these rings build up to form a shape.

These formations often start as very thin, hollow tubes. Scientists call these "soda straw" stalactites. They are usually only 4 to 5 mm in diameter and can be quite fragile. If debris plugs the hole of a soda straw, water begins to flow over the outside instead. This extra water deposits more calcite on the exterior, creating a thicker, cone-shaped stalactite. If the drip rate is too fast, the minerals do not have time to deposit on the ceiling. Instead, they fall to the floor to form a rounded shape called a stalagmite. Eventually, a stalactite and a stalagmite may meet to form a pillar or column.

Lava stalactites form in a very different environment. They appear in lava tubes while the molten lava is still active and fluid. This process happens much faster than in limestone caves. While limestone stalactites can take thousands of years to grow, lava stalactites form in hours, days, or weeks.

Some look like shark teeth because they grow by adding layers from successive lava flows. Others are called "splash stalactites" because they look like stretched taffy. There are even tubular lava stalactites that can reach 2 meters in length. These often have a twisted, vermiform appearance caused by escaping gases or air currents.

Another type of formation is the ice stalactite, commonly known as an icicle. These form when water seeps into a cave and the temperature is below freezing.

They can also form from the freezing of water vapor. In certain ocean conditions, saline water can create ice stalactites under sea ice called brinicles.

Unlike lava stalactites, which stop growing once the lava stops flowing, ice stalactites can grow back if the water and temperature remain suitable.

Stalactites can even grow on man-made concrete structures. These are called calthemites.

They form because concrete contains calcium oxide in the cement. When water hits the cement, it creates calcium hydroxide. As rainwater moves through cracks in the concrete, it carries this solution to the edge. When it hits the air, it reacts with carbon dioxide to deposit calcium carbonate.

These grow much faster than natural cave formations. A calthemite soda straw can grow as much as 2 mm per day.

History shows us that humans have long been interested in these shapes. The Roman natural historian Pliny mentioned them in his writings, though he did not use the modern name. The specific term "stalactite" was coined in the 17th century by the Danish physician Ole Worm. The name comes from the Greek word "stalaktos," which means dripping. Today, we use these formations to study how minerals and water interact over vast periods of time. From the longest stalactites in Lebanon and Brazil to the tiny drips in a concrete bridge, they reveal the slow, powerful work of chemistry.
