It is located in the western part of Antigua. The city sits within the Central Plain region. It surrounds a major body of water called St. John's Harbour. This city is the country's primate city. This means it is the most important urban center. It currently has a population of 22,219 people. This population represents about one quarter of the entire country. The city also dominates the parish of Saint John. This parish makes up much of the metropolitan area.

The city's layout is shaped by its unique geography. St. John's is built on a gentle slope. This slope is located east of the harbour. The land is mostly flat around the city. This allows a large network of roads to converge there. The soil is a type called clayey loam. There is also a high water table under the ground. A high water table means water is close to the surface. This makes it easy to find water in wells. However, the low elevation makes the coastline prone to flooding. The city also has a tropical savanna climate. This means the weather is summer-like all year. Days are hot and nights are warm. Rainfall is highest from September to November due to hurricanes.

The history of St. John's began with a small group of houses. These houses lined an area known as "the Cove." The modern city was laid out after a French invasion in 1666. The site was chosen for its strategic location. An act was passed in April 1668 to build a town on the harbour. By 1675, the legislature made it an official trading point. This increased the number of trading places on the island from two to six. The city grew very quickly. By 1689, it had overtaken Falmouth in population. St. John's remained the seat of the British Leeward Islands until 1959.

Throughout the 1700s, the city faced many challenges. It was occasionally impacted by fires and hurricanes. In 1736, a resident named Prince Klaas planned a slave revolt. He wanted to turn Antigua into an independent African kingdom. The plot was discovered and resulted in many punishments. To prevent future scares, barracks were built in 1741 and 1753. Large fires also hit the city in 1768 and 1782. In response to these fires, new building regulations were created. Public buildings were eventually required to have brick walls. They also needed tiled or slate roofs to stay safe. In 1784, the city even established a night watch.

Today, St. John's serves as the economic centre of the country. It is a very developed and cosmopolitan municipality. The city is famous for its shopping malls and boutiques. These shops sell designer jewellery and haute-couture clothing. Many cruise ships dock at Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay. Redcliffe Quay has a historic reputation. Heritage Quay is more modern and crowded. The city also has a strong investment banking industry. Many major world financial institutions keep offices here. There is also a market for fresh produce and fish. The Antigua Rum Distillery is located at the Citadel.

The city is also the heart of the national government. While no law names it the official capital, it holds all three branches of government. The Government Complex is in the Botanical Gardens neighbourhood. This area houses the High Court and the Prime Minister's Office. The Parliament Building is also located here. It opened in 2006. The city is a major hub for education. It is home to Antigua State College. This is the largest higher education institution in the country. There are also two medical schools located here. These are the American University of Antigua and the University of Health Sciences Antigua.

Culture and recreation are important parts of life in St. John's. The city features several interesting museums. The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda and the Museum of Marine Art are notable. The marine museum contains over 10,000 shells and shipwreck artefacts.
