As a major tourist destination, it is known for its deep historical roots and unique architectural character. It holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the contiguous United States. This long history makes the city a vital site for understanding the early colonial era of North America.

Before Spanish arrival, the region was home to the Timucua people. They lived in organized villages along the St. Johns River, which provided abundant natural resources.

These Indigenous groups practiced farming, fishing, and hunting to support their communities. They maintained complex trade networks and social structures led by hereditary chiefs. The Spanish eventually established their settlement within a Timucua village known as Seloy. The settlers utilized a large structure there called the Great House, which could hold several hundred people. This location was chosen for its strategic advantages in defense and water communications.

The formal founding of St. Augustine occurred on September 8, 1565.

Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, the first governor of Florida, led the Spanish expedition. He named the settlement San Agustín after the feast day of St. Augustine of Hippo. His ships had first sighted the Florida coast on August 28, which was that specific feast day. During the founding, the Spanish held a religious ceremony and a meal with local Native Americans. Some historians suggest this event was the first communal Thanksgiving in the continental United States. The expedition also established the Mission Nombre de Dios, a formal Franciscan outpost.

St. Augustine has functioned as a capital under several different national powers. For more than 200 years, it served as the capital of Spanish Florida. In 1763, control shifted and it became the capital of British East Florida. Following the Treaty of Versailles, it remained the capital during the Second Spanish Period. In 1821, Spain ceded Florida to the United States through the Adams–Onís Treaty. At that time, St. Augustine became one of two alternating capitals for the Florida Territory. The other capital city was Pensacola. By 1824, the territorial government moved the permanent capital to Tallahassee.

The city's defenses were frequently tested by foreign powers and pirates. In 1586, the English privateer Sir Francis Drake attacked and burned the settlement. Later, in 1668, the English buccaneer Robert Searle also sacked the town. These repeated incursions forced the Spanish Crown to prioritize the city's protection. Consequently, Queen Regent Mariana ordered the construction of a permanent masonry fortress. This structure, the Castillo de San Marcos, was completed in 1695 after ten years of work. Laborers used a unique stone called coquina and burned lime to build the fort and a protective sea wall.

Another significant historical development was the creation of Fort Mose in 1738. Governor Manuel de Montiano ordered this settlement two miles north of St. Augustine. It was established for a growing community of free Black people who had escaped from the Thirteen Colonies. These individuals became members of the Florida militia and converted to Catholicism to secure their freedom. Fort Mose became the first legally recognized free Black settlement in the present-day United States. This community acted as a vital military outpost and a buffer for the main city.

Today, the city's historical character continues to drive its economy through tourism. Visitors frequently walk along St. George Street, a major pedestrian thoroughfare in the downtown area. This street features over 30 historic houses and various tourist attractions. The Castillo de San Marcos remains a primary landmark for those studying Spanish colonial architecture. The city's population has grown steadily, rising from 12,975 in 2010 to 14,329 at the 2020 census. St. Augustine remains a living museum of the complex interactions between Spanish, English, French, and Indigenous cultures.
