In other cases, the ground might dip down sharply. One way this happens is through karst topography. This is when water moves through cracks or large caves. These openings act like a path for the water. Some springs even happen on the ocean floor.

These discharge at least 2800 liters of water every second. Florida has at least 27 of these huge springs. The Ozarks in Missouri and Arkansas have 10 of them. There are also 11 more in the Snake River area of Idaho.

Springs connect to many parts of our daily lives. Many people use spring water for drinking or for farming. Some people even visit spa towns to soak in mineral springs. You might see trout fishing in the cool water of a spring branch. These streams stay cool in summer and do not freeze in winter.

Several natural forces drive water to the surface. Gravity and hydrostatic pressure are two primary drivers. A spring often forms when the water table reaches the surface level. It can also form if the terrain dips down sharply. In karst topography, groundwater travels through a network of cracks, fissures, and large caves. This happens because groundwater continually dissolves permeable bedrock like limestone or dolomite. Some springs are even found on the ocean floor. These can spew warmer, low-salinity water directly into the sea.

Springs can be classified by how they are forced to the surface. In a confined aquifer, the recharge area sits at a higher elevation than the outlet. This creates artesian springs, where pressure pushes water straight up. These can even emerge from caves, which act like a hose for the water. Non-artesian springs might simply flow from a higher elevation to a lower one. Other springs result from volcanic or magma activity. This geothermal activity creates hot springs or geysers. Geysers are special hot springs where trapped, superheated water creates steam. This results in recurring eruptions of hot water and steam.

There are many specific types of springs based on their location and features. Depression springs occur in basins or alluvial valleys. Contact springs form along hillsides when groundwater hits an impermeable layer called an aquiclude. Fracture or joint springs occur when water meets a crack in the rock. Tubular springs flow from circular fissures, such as those in lava tubes. Carbonated springs, like Soda Springs, emit water with dissolved carbon dioxide. These are sometimes called bubbling springs. You may also find helocrene springs, which are diffuse flows that sustain marshlands.

Scientists classify springs by their flow, known as discharge or resurgence. The amount of discharge depends on the recharge basin. This includes the size of the area that captures water and the amount of precipitation. Human activity can also affect this. Withdrawing groundwater reduces pressure in an aquifer and decreases flow. Springs are further categorized by how often they flow. Perennial springs flow constantly throughout the year. Intermittent springs are temporary and active after rain or seasonal changes. Periodic springs, like geysers, vent at regular or irregular intervals.

We measure the size of springs using the term magnitude. The largest are "first-magnitude" springs. These discharge at least 2,800 liters of water per second. Florida has at least 27 of these massive springs. The Ozarks in Missouri and Arkansas contain 10. There are also 11 in the Snake River area of Idaho. Smaller springs follow a scale from second-magnitude down to eighth-magnitude. An eighth-magnitude spring might discharge less than 1 pint per minute. This scale helps hydrologists understand the scale of the water system.

Spring water often contains minerals dissolved from underground rocks. This is measured as total dissolved solids, or TDS. If a spring has at least 250 parts per million of TDS, it can be called mineral water. Some springs are called soda springs because they contain large amounts of sodium carbonate. The mineral content can change the water's color. For example, water heavy with iron or tannins may look orange. Because groundwater maintains a steady temperature, spring water stays cool in summer and often remains unfrozen in winter. This makes them great habitats for certain trout species.

Humans have used springs for many different purposes. They provide water for drinking, irrigation, and electricity generation. In the American Southwest, indigenous people built spring-fed canals called acequias. Many people also visit spa towns to use mineral springs for therapy. Some springs have even held a sacred or "holy" status in local folklore and religion. However, it is important to test water quality. Some springs may contain high levels of arsenic or other substances. Always ensure a spring is safe before using it for drinking.
